MEMORIAL ERECTED
TO JEFFERSON DAVIS
of Confederate Vets
Witness Unveiling.
BIG PARADE OF THE VETERANS
The Monument Is the Fruition of Six
teen Years of Patient and Loving
Effort on the Part of the People of
the South.
Richmond, Va., June 3. —An ever
lasting memorial of Jefferson Davis,
the patriot and statesman, who was
the chosen ieader of “The Lost Cause
uud the first and only president of the
Confederate States of America, was
unveiled here Monday as the crown
ing feature of the annual reunion at
the Confederate Veterans.
The ceremony was made the occasion
for a grand military pageant in which
every veteran in gray who was physi
cally able and many ,a one who was
not, participated with an energy and
enthusiasm which defied the life-sap
ping years that have gone since he
bore arms for the south. The drawing
aside of the veil which draped the
figure representing the veterans’ be
loved leader and the first gun of the
presidential salute which Immediately
followed was a signal for an outburst
of cheering which was swollen to
thunderous applause by the sons and
daughters of the veterans. Tears
bedimmed the eyes and coursed down
the cheeks of the boys in gray and
their emotion-choked voices would
have but a feeble effort had it not
been for the assistance given by a
younger and homage-paying gener
al ion.
The event was a fitting close to
what Is universally recognized as the
la t "great gathering of the confed
erate veterans.” It was the feature
t at drew many thousands from all
sections of the south who otherwise
would not have come.
The unveiling of the monument was
the fruition of eighteen years of pa
tient and loving effort and every man
wtio wore the southern uniform had
In his heart a desire to be present.
A devotion which knows no equal in
American history is responsible for
its building. It was a work the
south had to do without help. There
vas no united nation to bear the ex
pense. Love and sacrifice were the
Masons who piled the stones and
spread th emotar that cemented them
into an enduring memorial.
