Fire Destroys Uplands Hotel.
Eastman, Ga., June 10.—The Up
lands hotel, a large wooden structure
was destroyed by tire at an early hour
on Sunday morning. The alarm was
given about 2:30 o’clock, and within
an hour the building was in ashes.
For a time a large number of build
ings with’in reach of the great rain
of sparks that fell were immediately
threatened. It is believed that the
Southern depot escaped only because
of having a tile roof. The origin ot
the fire Is unknown.
Shot Italian Six Times.
Savannah, Ga., June 10. —Police-
man T. R. Avaunt emptied his pistol
into Napoleon Sevirol, an Italian,
on Sunday morning. Sevirol died
while on the way to the police station.
He had been shot twice in the head
and four times in the body. The
otlicer’s coat was cut in three places,
but the knife used by Sevirol had fail
ed to reach A vaunt’s flesh. Avaunt
had been shadowing the Italian, whose
k lions had excited his suspicions.
Prominent Alabaman Dead.
Huntsville, Ala., June 10. —Or. J.
P. Hampton, aged 82 years, died Sat
urday afternoon at Meridlanville, af
ter a long Illness. He was a con
federate veteran, having been a cap
tain in the Forty-third Mississippi In
fantry* He was 21 years moderator
of tha Liberty Baptist association;
was several times representative of
Madison county In the state legisla
ture, and was for a long time presi
dent of the Madison County Medical
society.

Jury Finds Battle Guilty.
Macon, Ga., June 7. —Thursday the
jury in the United States circuit court
returned a verdict of guilty of murder
of D. M. Berry, in the government
building here on May 16, last. 'live
case will be carried to the United
States supreme court on a question ol
Jurisdiction, which is disputed and
on other grounds. The verdict
means a life sentence.
Deadly Work by Exploding Gas.
Collinsville, Pa., June 11.—‘Mary
Monoghan, two years old, Is dead;
Mr. and Mrs. John J. Monoghan,
parents of the child, are dying; and
three other persons are in a serious
condition from burns received in a
gas explosion early Monday at the
Monoghan home. The explosion was
caused when gas escaping from a de
fective rubber hose attached to a
stove was ignited by an oil lamp.
"Black Hand" Demands Ransom.
New Orleans, June 11. —Six thou
sand dollars was demanded as ran
som Monday for 8-year-old Walter
son of a well-to-do Italian
undertaker. The boy disappeared two
days ago, and the police have vain
ly searohed for him. The demand
for ransom money, in a letter signed
"Black Hand,” was their first clew.
