Is Very Probably the Smallest Town
In These Parts That a Big League
Club Will Make.
Waynesboro, Ga., will very prob
ably go on record as being the small
est town in these parts that a big
league ball club will make. The De
troit Tigers are to play the Augusta
Sally League club there on March 30
according to an announcement made
yesterday.
The game was arranged through the
efforts of the Waynesboro Post of the
American Legion and is being ad
vertised extensively throughout Burke
and adjoining counties.
For many years Waynesboro has
been a real baseball town and dur
ing the days of the Million-Dollar
League very probably had a larger
payroll than any cluo in the Sally
League. At the time its citizens went
in for amateur ball they provided
themselves with an excellent park
with a grandstand seating more than
a thousand people. There is every
indication that this stand will be tax
ed with more fans on March 30th than
ever before in its history.
"Waynesboro people love baseball
and they will have it regardless of
the cost . Once they had started, out
to bring Ty Cobb’s men there they
would do it or Dreak a trace.
There is one player with the De
troit squad, who, le on e the fact that
he is a recruit, will receive almost
as much attention as the great stars.
Samtuy Barnes, try-out for second
base, for two summers plaved on the
Waynesboro team. At that time he
was in school at Auburn. On the Way
nesboro team with him in lf‘li) were
Sewell, Riggs Stephenson, then stu
dents of the University of Alabama,
but now members of the Cleveland In
dians —Augusta Chronicle.
GOOD HOADS GREATEST
ISSUE BEFORE PEOPLE
Atlanta, Georgia, March 15. —The
Georgia Roads Association has plan
ned to have the matter of the propos
ed $75,000,000 road bond issue pre
sented at the spring term of the court
in every county in the state, and at
the district meetings of the state federa
tion of women’s clubs, according to
T. G. Farmer, Jr., managing director
of the good roads association.
“We regard the good roads bond is
sue as the most important piece of
legislature coming before the next
legislature, and we have no doubt of
its passage, if we can get the people
informed as to its benefits,” said Mr.
Farmer in an interview toddy. “In
quiries concerning the plan have come
in from every section of the state at
such a rate that we have had to in
crease our office force to handle the
correspondence. We are sending to
each inquirer a little good roads pri
mer and chart showing how the bonds
will be floated and retired, and an
swering every question a voter could
ask regarding the bond plan.”
“Sentiment is rapidly crystalizing
in favor of the bonds and by the time
the legislature meets we expect to
see the issue so popular that no one
can be found who dare lift hi& voice
to longer keep Georgia in the mud.”
WHY NOT!

Augusta, Ga., March 24th.—Th»
Committee of Fifty of the Board of
Commerce which was responsible tor
the famous Augusta Community Bar
becue of 1920 and 1921, when 7,000
Georgians and Carolinians were tea
at one time under one roof, there

and therefore, for the country, has
gone in for baseball. This Committee
has arranged an exhibition and match
game for February March 31st, be
tween the Detroit Tigers, managed
by the incomparable Ty Cobb ana the
Augusta team of the South Atlantic
League which is directed by Neal Ball
the first man in the big leagues to
make a triple play unassisted. Just
to add a thrill to the performance,
Neal made it in a world series game.
The Committee of Fifty is respon
sible for the fact that the Detroit
team of the American League is train
ing in Augusta. Ty Cobb, who is a
resident of Augusta, was anxious to
bring his charges to the city, but
there were no facilities at Warren
Park, the local baseball plant, for his
players. The Committee of Fifty
promptly got busy and found out if
they underwrote a certain sum the of
ficials of Richmond Academy would
erect the necessary club house. Tv
Cobb the announced that be would
bring his ball tossers to Augusta, and
he did. The Committee of Fifty is
now promoting the game to meet the
indebtedness contracted in order to
make the necessary improvements.
A record baseball crowd is expect
ed at the game; the entire proceeds
of w'hich will be turned over to the
Board of Commerce through the cour
tesy of Managers Cobb and Bell. Ad
mission will be one dollar. Parties
are being ifarmed even at this early
date, in towm scores o? miles from
Augusta to motor up to the game,
and reservations are coming in in a
; steady stream. Baseball such as will
