SEAL ROCKS
The great city by the gate of the sea —San Francisco —crowns the extrem
ity of a long, rugged peninsula near the center of the state of California sep
arating the Pacific ocean from San Francisco bay. This bay, a noble sheet of
water, is one of the grandest harbors in the world. The Golden Gate, which
gives entrance from the sea to the bay, is very beautiful.
We took numerous charming excursions in and around San Francisco. A
great attraction from Sutro Heights park is the view of the Seal Rocks. W e
sat at Cliff house for hours watching the seals. These three rocks, from 20 to
50 feet high, are only a stone’s throw from the land. On them huge sea-lions
bask in the sun. Some of the creatures weigh over half a ton and are from 12
.r*4ft <a
belonged to the United States until the government granted them to San Fran
cisco; then they were placed under the protection of the law so the fishermen
could not shoot the seals under pretense that they ate a great many fish and
Interfered with their catches.
Formerly there was a very large seal on Seal Rocks that weighed about
two thousand pounds. He was named soon after the Civil war after General
Ben Butler, and was called “Old Ben.” Within the memory of the first white
man he was known as the “King of the Seal Rocks” and was guessed to be
about one hundred and twenty-five years old. “Old Ben” died some years ago
and was stuffed and put in the museum near by.

THE GREAT' MIDWAY AT TOE SAVANNAH ?!
..... ...
HjHgPjw
—Foltz, Savannah.
Pink lemonade, hot dogs, and sauer kraut, cotton candy and picturesque,
red apples—to say nothing of the more delectable menus offered in the mid
way restaurants —furnish a plenty to divert the minds and satisfy ravenous
appetites of visitors to the Tri-State Exposition at Savannah. This year, Octo
ber 27-November 1, there will be the usual number of food venders’ stands to
catch the eager eye of the children who crave the taste of these holiday
edibles.
It is during such a rush hour along the midway at Savannah as shown in
the picture that the man behind the weiner stand or the fellow pulling mo
lasses candy does a "zero hour” trade. The crowds surge to and fro seeking
the amusement offered by the carnival. The side shows, too, have their big
run during banner days and a “wholesale” business is carried on as the kid
dies induce their parents to "linger awhile.”
The thousands as shown were caught by the fair photographer on an
ordinary day after the afternoon’s program closed before the grand stand.
The attendance at Savannah’s fair last year was good. The officials are now
planning to make it better this year because of a more varied offering in all
departments .amusements included. The industrial and agricultural condi
tions also poiat to a prosperous season during the fall months.
