Georgia Derby Championship
The last brace in the Georgia Derby Championship finished up in the unseasonably mild weather Monday after
noon. Some 39 young dogs were entered in the stake, but Thunder House, handled by Steve Hurdle of Missis
sippi, outran the pack for the championship. The pointer female is owned by Doug Arthur of Eads,Tenn. Runner-
up honors went to Erin’s Stoney River, a pointer male owned and handled by Sean Derrig of Chicago, III. Judges
Harold Ray and George Tracy watched the two dogs run in the same brace during the competition. The Georgia
Derby Championship is just one of three derbies in the world that can qualify a dog to compete in the national
championship. Pictured are, from left, kneeling: Hurdle, scout Rickey Furney posing Thunder House and Derrig

Waynesboro officials have
adopted an $8.5 million budget
for 2009, along with a water and
sewer rate increase to the tune
of 3.9 percent.
City council approved the
budget with a 4-2 vote Monday
night after councilman Curtis
Bell asked for more time to con
sider cuts, including take-home
vehicles for some city employ
ees.
“I’ve worked on this budget
for six months, and I’m ready
to roll,” councilman Dick Byne
said, noting that changes can
still be made down the line.
Even though the budget
passed, city council has called
a 6 p.m. meeting this Friday to
take up the issue again.
In addition to a possible
change in the city’s vehicle use
policy, councilmen are expected
to discuss hiring at least one ad
ditional police officer later this
year.
As it stands, the budget calls
for big cuts in overtime wages,
travel and capital purchases, as
well as a 3 percent raise, or merit
