Metal thieves target churches
By Elizabeth Billips
lizbillips@yahoo.com
Churches have become the
latest targets for thieves.
Last week, three Baptist
church congregations found out
their air conditioning units had
been stripped.
According to reports filed at
the Burke County Sheriff’s Of
fice, the thefts took place at
Gordon Hill, Palmer Grove and
McElmurray Baptist churches.
At one church, a member
who’d surveyed damage
Wednesday afternoon saw a
suspicious vehicle on church
grounds later that night. He be
gan following the car, but lost
it after the driver turned out the
lights. According to the report,
when the complainant returned
to the church, he found that
more copper had been taken
from the units.
All three churches are located
in the northern portion of the
county, and investigators be
lieve the thefts could be related.
Meanwhile, burglaries in
Burke County continue to slow
following dozens of arrests
over the past few weeks. Offic
ers say the $10,000 in reward
money posted by the county
commission seems to be play
ing a big role.
Waynesboro police were
called to break-ins at Leslie
Drive, Briarwood Apartments
and East Seventh Street while
deputies responded to break-ins
at Briar Creek Estates, Thomp
son Bridge Road, Lawson Road
and Shuemake Road. At
tempted break-ins were re
ported on Savannah Avenue in
Waynesboro and Clarks Place
Road.
Since January, around 412
burglaries have been reported,
resulting in close to 80 arrests.

Where’s the beef?
A Waynesboro man was jailed Saturday for running out of
Harveys’ with $162 worth of meat hidden inside his clothes.
Reginald Willie Johnson, 27, was charged with shoplifting
and interference with police after a store employee saw him
walk by with packages bulging from his shirt. According to
the report, Johnson told the employee not to say anything be
cause he was hungry.
Johnson fled to the Cherry Street area with the packages in
tow, but was soon stopped short by police and arrested.

One of Richmond County’s most wanted was hiding in
Waynesboro.
Friday morning, Waynesboro police arrested Augusta resi
dent Freddie Ray Lariscey Jr., 30, who was wanted for manu
facturing methamphetamine and parole violation.
According to Police Chief Karl E. Allen, officers found him
at Orchard Hill Apartments following an anonymous call from
a tipster who’d seen his mug on “Augusta’s Most Wanted” the
night before.
Too close for comfort
Two Sardis residents called deputies after bullets began whiz
zing through the woods near their homes.
According to reports filed at the Burke County Sheriff’s Of
fice, one man on Twin Lakes and another on East Ellison Bridge
Road asked for help Saturday afternoon after the shots were
fired by a sportsman on land in between them.
One man said he shouted out, “hey, I am over here,” and a
gunman yelled back that he would move. The other said when
he complained, the gunman said he would shoot in the other
direction. According to the reports, the alleged offender was
firing the gun from his five-acre parcel situated between the
two complainants’ homes.
In an unrelated case, a Hephzibah landowner says someone
set up a firing range on his hunting property without permis
sion. He told deputies when he and his children went hunting,
he found a shooting bench near the woodline and later saw
neighbors setting up targets and firing shots. The man said his
box stands were directly in front of the line of fire, and that he
and his kids were forced to stay there until after dark for fear
of being shot.
The wall
A Burke County man trying to elude deputies had a wall in
his way.
According to reports, a deputy was frisking a Club Paradise
patron when he felt a plastic bag of powdery substance in his
coat pocket. The man ran away but smacked right into a wall,
losing the bag in the process. Deputies identified the man and
are testing the powder.
