“We knew then we would have
permanent grounds for the trials.”
Mr. Mobley died in November
1998, but his influence remains
strong at the Burke County trials.
Mrs. Mobley has organized the
event ever since and remains an
integral part of keeping the local
stakes a premier event in the
sport. Connie Burgamy, who was
Mr. Mobley’s right hand for years,
remains indispensable for Mrs.
Mobley.
Numbers are as strong as ever,
and Burke County’s trials have
grown to become some of the
largest in the nation’s history.
Roughly three years ago, the
old stables at Di-Lane were con
demned and had to be demol
ished. The trials faced yet another
hurdle raising funds to build new
ones.
Mrs. Mobley and members of
the GFTA campaigned for a new
facility, raising funds privately
and seeking help from the City
of Waynesboro, Burke County
and the state. Some of those who
contributed substantial amounts
indicated their past affiliation with
Lamar Mobley as their reason.
State representative Bob Lane of
Statesboro championed the cause
to build the stables. Senator J.B.
Powell later introduced the legis
lation to have the stables named
for Lamar Mobley.
“It’s just an honor to get any
kind of facility named for some
one, especially at the state level,”
Mrs. Mobley said. "For someone
in Burke County to be recognized
by the state ... it was just over
whelming for me to hear that they
were going to do it.”
ANNUAL GFTA EVENTS
The GFTA’s annual stakes at Di-Lane will kick off with the Georgia Derby and
All-Age Championships January 2, followed by the Georgia Derby Classic and
Open Dog Shooting Championship later that month.
The stables will be dedicated to Mobley at a ceremony set for noon on Jan.
14. The Georgia Amateur Celebration will be held in late February.
SUPPORTING THE TRIALS
As the event approaches, the GFTA is conducting its annual membership
drive and collecting donations from local supporters. Membership dues for the
GFTA are $25 per person or business and are not limited to those directly in
volved in the trials. Anyone who wants to support the event is welcome to join.
For more information or to join, contact Nell Mobley at 706-554-2991 or mail
a check to the GFTA, P.O. Box 692, Waynesboro, GA 30830.
Arrest

McGee, he said, is also the
prime suspect in a burglary on
Fred Chance Road in Perkins in
which 35 firearms were stolen.
The sheriff said 22 of those fire
arms have been recovered so far,
including two guns that are on
hold in Richmond County where
they were seized in connection
with other crimes. He expects
more charges against McGee and
arrests of more suspects associ
ated with him. “He didn’t do this
by himself,” Sheriff Oglesby said.
McGee will have a number of
charges to answer to in Burke
County as well.
Sgt. Dedric Smith, an investi
gator for the sheriff’s office, said
the blue Tahoe was stolen off the
lot of a Kia dealership in Augusta
in February 2008.
Among the items recovered
from the Tahoe and home was a
box of collectors’ coins taken dur
ing a Nov. 8 burglary on Thomp
son Bridge Road.
Sgt. Smith said jewelry and a
Remington shotgun believed to
be stolen were also found. "We’re
trying to find out who this belongs
to,” he said, noting that the origi
nal owner wrote his or her initials
on the gun.
Nearly $1,800 cash was found
in McGee’s pants pocket.
He is being held at the Burke
County Jail on numerous theft
and weapons charges. He remains
a suspect in several other cases
in both Burke and Jenkins coun
ties.
Deputies Roosevelt Lodge and Charles Prescott with a cache of stolen goods recovered
following the arrest of Henry McGee.
