BES Math Competition
Blakeney Elementary School held its annual math compe
tition last week challenging students with questions based
on the Georgia Performance Standards. Students were
chosen to participate by their homeroom teacher based
on their math performance in the classroom. “It was such
an honor for these students to be chosen, and we are proud
of all the competitors,” said Jennifer Hudson, BES gifted
education teacher.
Winners for third grade were, from left: third place, Makayla
Collins; first place, Kitty Lewis; and second place, Sebastian
Prowse.

BCMS Math Challenge
Burke County Middle School students par
ticipated in a Math Challenge Competition on
Nov. 10. Students with the highest math av
erage in each homeroom were chosen as
competitors. The purpose of the Math Chal
lenge is to give students experience in a math
competition in a relaxed and familiar atmo
sphere and instill a desire to be the best they
can be in all they do. This competition was
one of two preliminaries; the winners will
then be invited to a third competition in Feb
ruary. “It was a good experience for all par
ticipants, helping prepare them for Math Fest
in Riverdale, Georgia on March 20,2010,” said

School QualityTeam to build
interest in math while mak
ing learning fun.” This is
SGA’s second math compe
tition of the year, leaving
them with only one more
competition to complete.

county competition on Feb.
17 and 18, held at Blakeney

Dress up
Students from Christy Palmer’s first-grade class at
Waynesboro Primary School dressed up as their favor
ite story book character and wrote and presented infor
mative speeches to their classmates. To help make the
presentations really come alive, Palmer constructed a
make-believe television for the students to sit in as they
presented their speeches. Above, Mary Catherine Jack-
son presented her speech dressed as her favorite char
acter, “Fancy Nancy.”
