College students caught
in fraudulent check scam
By Elizabeth Billips
lizbillips@yahoo.com
A Waynesboro police of
ficer was assaulted last week
after a group of college stu
dents tried to cash fraudulent
checks at Wal-Mart.
According to Chief Inves
tigator Gene Boseman, store
employees called for help last
Wednesday night when a
group of young adults, mostly
from South Carolina, pre
sented several forged checks
from Greenville Technical
College.
Officer Chris Greene in
jured his knee when 20-year-
old Freddie Boyton Jr. of Au
gusta resisted arrest and tried
to fight him off.
Boyton, who was already
wanted on a Newton County
warrant, was charged with
obstruction and conspiracy to
commit a crime. Students
Akeem Reed, 21, and Ken
neth Davis, 24, both of
Georgetown, S.C., were also
charged with conspiracy.
According to Investigator
Boseman, two carloads of stu
dents were at Wal-Mart and as
many as seven may be in
volved in the scam.
“One has a parent who is a
professor at Clemson,” he
said. “They all appear to be
from prominent families.’’

Attack on women ends with arrest
By Elizabeth Billips

A Louisville man was ar
rested for pushing a woman
down the steps, shooting at an
other and then retreating into
the woods with an ax.
Allen Jenkins, 55, was jailed
Friday night after an alcohol-
related fracas at his Bailey
Road home ended in gunfire.
According to Burke County
Deputy Daniel Rodriguez, the
trouble began when Jenkins
and his longtime girlfriend be
gan arguing and he fired a
shotgun at her.
The girlfriend called her
daughter-in-law to come pick
her up. The couple was fight
ing on the front porch when
the daughter-in-law arrived,
and Jenkins pushed her down
the steps after she intervened
and was turning to leave.
A few minutes later, the
daughter-in-law called for
help, telling the dispatcher
she’d run away but that
Jenkins had a gun and that
she’d heard it go off and
feared her mother-in-law had
been shot.
Deputies found Jenkins’ in
jured girlfriend in a ditch by
the house. Although she hadn’t
been shot, Deputy Rodriguez
said her hand was grazed by a
bullet two weeks ago, but the
assault was never reported.
Jenkins was found hiding in
the woods with the ax and was
charged with aggravated as
sault and battery

In Del-Mac hold-up
Lost shoe could lead to gunmen
By Elizabeth Billips
lizbillips@yahoo.com
A money bag and shoelaces
weren’t on the to-do list for two
robbers who held a Del-Mac
Minute Mart clerk at gunpoint.
The gunmen got away, but
Waynesboro police say they left a
trail of money and a lost shoe.
The East Sixth Street conve
nience store was robbed by two
unidentified black males around
6:55 p.m. last Tuesday. One wore
a white hooded sweatshirt, and the
other was dressed in camouflage.
Chief Investigator Gene
Boseman said a third black male
who bought a beer just moments
before the hold-up is believed to
have acted as a look-out.
According to the report, one
robber pointed the gun at the
clerk’s face while the other went
behind the counter and grabbed the
cash drawer. The hold-up was wit
nessed by a second clerk who was
stocking a cooler just a few feet
had been removed.
“He ran right out of his shoe,”
Investigator Boseman said, noting
that it’s been sent to the GBI crime
lab for DNA testing.
A canine followed the robbers’
scent to the railroad track at Lee
Street where officers believe the
pair may have been picked up.
Investigators have released pho
tos taken from the security foot
age in hopes that someone can
identify the robbers. Investigator
Boseman said the actual video
may also be viewed by anyone
who thinks they may know who
is responsible.
