EBA basketball tips off under new leadership
ByTres Bragg
tresbragg@bellsouth.net
Basketball season is under
way for Edmund Burke Acad
emy, and two new coaches are
calling the shots.
Former Robert Toombs
stand-out Wes Parker landed
the boys head coaching posi
tion this year. Parker played
four years of basketball at
Piedmont College and served
as an assistant coach while
earning his Masters in Educa
tion degree there. This is
Parker’s first year as head
coach, but he’s looking for
ward to his first season with the
Spartans. “I hope to continue
the success EBA is having this
year,” Parker said. "The base
ball and football teams both
made it to the final four. The
One Act Play cast was state
champions, and the cheerlead
ers were state runners-up. I
want to bring that excitement
to the boys basketball program
and continue the success,” he
added. The Spartans were
knocked out of the first round
of the region tournament last
year, but Parker is hoping for
more this year. “We have a tal
ented group of young men, and
I hope we can reach our full
potential by the time the region
tournament comes around,” he
said.
Ray Miller will serve as the
head coach for the girls team.
Miller, who earned his Masters
in Education degree from
Georgia Southern University
in 1992, has plenty of experi
ence on the court. He taught
and coached for the Jenkins
County School System for 31
years. He coached girls basket
ball for six years and boys bas
ketball for 14. “We are very
young this year,” Miller said.
“We only have three seniors on
the team. But, we do have
some speed, and we hope to
use that in our favor. We have
several different sets on de
fense, so we hope to turn our
defense into some fast break
lay-ups. Offensively, we’re
going to have to rely on mov
ing the ball around until some
thing opens up inside.”
Parker and Miller had their
first games of the season yes
terday against Thomas
Jefferson but results weren’t
available at press time. Their
first home games will be this
Friday against Briarwood
Academy. The girls will tip-off
at 6:30 p.m. and the guys will
immediately follow. Read next
week’s The True Citizen for
game highlights.
