In Memory
John ‘Jack’ Felton Garner
Ms. Mary J. Perry
John Felton Garner “Jack.” of
Waynesboro. Ga., a loving hus
band, father, grandfather, and
friend, passed away Sunday,
Nov. 29. 2009.
Graveside memorial services
with military honors will be
held at noon. Wednesday. Dec.
9. at Burke Memorial Gardens,
Waynesboro. The Rev. Kit H.
Brinson will officiate.
The family will receive
friends at the funeral home prior
to the service from 10 until
11:45 a.m.
He was born on Jan. 8, 1922,
in Greensboro, N.C.. to the late
Felton Garner and Myrtle
McGee Garner.
He attended North Carolina
State University. He was a U.S.
Naval Seaman having served in
the Pacific during World War II
where he received a Purple
Heart for wounds received in
action when the vessel was tor
pedoed and sunk on Aug. 12,
1943, off Lunga Point,
Guadalcanal.
The vessels he served on were
the USS John Penn, USS Holly,
USS Chilton, and he was sta
tioned at the U.S. Naval Station
in San Diego, Calif.
His numerous awards in
cluded the World War II Victory
Medal, the American Area Cam
paign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific
Campaign Medal and the Euro
pean African Campaign Medal.
He was a member of St.
Michael’s Episcopal Church
and held memberships in the
Elks Club and the Lions Club.
He was owner of Bolivia Lum
ber Company and a longtime
golf enthusiast.
He was preceded in death by
his wife of 60 years, Anita G.
Garner.
He is survived by his son,
Frederick F. Garner and his
wife, Katie, of Waynesboro; his
daughter, Deborah G. Beesley
of Loganville, Ga.; four grand
children, Marie Smith and her
husband, Jeff, of Augusta, Ga.,
Reed Gamer of Augusta, Molly
Gamer of Waynesboro and Will
Beesley of Loganville; a great-
granddaughter, Kate Smith; and
a great-grandson. Cole Smith.
Honorary pallbearers will be
Frank Griffin, Jack Brantley,
Larry Askew, Lamar Murray,
and all other members of the Bi-
Lo Coffee Club.

her side.
A native of Sardis, Ga., she
resided in Sylvania, and was of
the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by
her parents. Bud and Bertha
Johnson; her husband, Garnett
Perry; and a daughter, Mary
Ann Perry.
Surviving are a son, Bill Perry
(Debbie), of Wrens, Ga.; three
daughters, Margaret Moore
(Leslie), of Springfield, Ga.,
Theresa Burke (Reamer), of
Statesboro, Ga., and Elizabeth
Adams (Mark), of Aiken, S.C.;
her sister, Agnes Miles, of
Hephzibah, Ga.; 10 grandchil
dren; 19 great grandchildren;
and many nieces and nephews.
The family received friends
Friday, Nov. 27, 2009 from 5-7
p.m. at DeLoach-McKerley Lu
neral Home, Waynesboro.
Luneral services were Satur
day, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m. at
DeLoach-McKerley Funeral
Home, Waynesboro.
Interment followed at Corinth
Christian Church Cemetery,
Girard.
Pallbearers were Shane Perry,
Tony Perry, Charles Oglesby,
Chris Marshall, Brian Adams
and Johnny Johnson Jr.
The family and pallbearers
were asked to assemble at the
funeral home by 10:30 a.m. on
Saturday.

Burke Happenings
BCHS school council
The Burke County High School school council will meet 4
p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the BCHS conference room.
Playhouse raffle
The BCHS Construction Education, Skills USA class is con
ducting a Playhouse Raffle.
The building is 8x8’. The front door is green like the window
trim. It has a small loft and a vinyl floor. What a great Christmas
gift this would be! The playhouse is located outside of Salter’s
Building Supply. It will also be downtown during “Christmas on
Liberty Square” to view.
Tickets may be purchased from a Skills USA student, Salter
Building Supply, McKinney Wholesale, or any Burke County
Public School.
The drawing will be held Dec. 11, 2009. You don’t have to be
present to win.
Christmas Giveaway
The Women of Essence Social Club is sponsoring a Christmas
giveaway for children ages 5-12.
Participants are asked to essays answering the question “Why
Should Santa Choose Me?”
They are also asked to submit a wish list along with clothing
and shoe sizes. The top three letters will be chosen on Dec. 19,
and each winner will receive $ 150 to use toward purchasing items
on their wish lists.
Essays should be mailed to P.O. Box 1153, Waynesboro, GA
30830, and should be postmarked not later than Dec. 12.
