Bears start
season with
big win
By Anne Marie Kyzer
annemariek@thetruecitizen.com
The Bears scored more than
double the points of their first
opponent of the season.
Burke County High School’s
boys (1-0) defeated Jenkins
County 74-36 last Saturday in
Waynesboro.
“We played well, especially
defensively" head coach Purvis
Dukes said. "I thought we
played very unselfish basketball
and that’s definitely a
positive. The kids have worked
extremely hard to improve in
dividually and, hopefully, we
will keep the intensity and ef
fort intact all season.”
Several of the Bears pitched
in to put points on the board
with four players scoring in
double digits. Junior Jahanas
Harden led the team with 14
points and senior Curtis Barber
followed with 13. They sank
two shots each from the three-
point arch. Junior Jacquez
Rozier, who slammed 3 dunks,
and senior Martaveous Smith
each scored 12. Rozier and
Smith had picked up 10 points
each by the half and saw lim
ited action in the final two peri
ods.
The Bears will travel to
Millen Saturday night for a sec
ond game against the Eagles.

Lady Bears take
down Eagles
By Anne Marie Kyzer
annemariek@thetruecitizen.com
The Lady Bears started the
season with a win last Saturday
over Jenkins County.
Burke County High School’s
girls (1-0) took down the Lady
Eagles 63-48.
The Lady Bears were down
25-19 at halftime but managed
to put up 44 points in the final
two periods to steal the win.
Head coach Angelica Collins
hopes the inexperience that held
the team back last year will be
overcome this time around.
“They have worked ex
tremely hard this summer.. .more
as a team,” she said. “I see some
major improvements in several
players.”
Junior Antomia Walker pulled
off a triple-double in the game,
scoring 24 points and recording
10 steals and 10 rebounds.
Coach Collins said she has seen
Walker mature over the past
year and is looking for her to
provide leadership on the court.
Senior Eddriss Miles put up
9 points and senior Diamonique
Cooper added 8. Miles also
grabbed 8 rebounds and man
aged 3 steals.
The Lady Bears played in a
Ladies Night Out tournament at
Glenn Hills before the season
officially began and turned in a
solid performance there. They
lost narrowly to Glenn Hills, 57-
49, but beat Ridge Spring of
South Carolina 79-34.
Coach Collins said she is go
ing back to the coaching style
she brought with her to Burke
County when she first came,
which she called “up tempo,
man-to-man, in your face de
fense.” She hopes that will yield
the same results it did back then
- winning seasons.
“We will see if it puts us back
where we once were,” she said.
“Only time will tell.”
