Cattlemen bid for education
The Burke County Cattlemen’s Association raised more than $1,100 for its scholar
ship fund last week with an auction at its annual Christmas banquet. The beef and
dairy producers bid on items ranging from farm supplies and tractor toys to gift sets
and baked goods that were donated by members and local businesses. The high
seller of the evening was the quilt displayed above by Sally Kate Blackburn. The quilt
fetched $225 and was sewn and donated by Beth Gearhart, who works on Jimmy and
Ginny Franks’ dairy farm outside of Waynesboro. The association funds a scholar
ship each year to a graduating senior in Burke County who plans to major in agricul
ture, preferably animal or dairy science, in college.

Steve Moss, manager for the
local Waynesboro Wal-Mart,
and Victoria Boyd, local Wal-
Mart office assistant, presented
the gift cards.
“This is the part I like best
about my job - giving back to
our schools and our children!”
Moss said.
SGA was the first school se
lected to participate in this new
program, and then 10 teacher’s
names were randomly drawn
for the gift cards. The gift cards
may be used by the chosen
teachers for whatever educa
tional purpose they choose.
The Teacher Rewards Program
replaced the franchise’s
Teacher of the Year Program.
According to a press release
published by Wal-Mart in Sep
tember, on average, teachers
spend more than $500 a year
out of their own pockets for
classroom supplies, according
to the American Federation of
Teachers. To help offset rising
expenses for classroom sup
plies, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club
and the Wal-Mart Foundation
have joined together to launch
Teacher Rewards, a new pro
gram that is providing more

FBC hosts Festival of
Lessons and Carols
From Staff Reports
First Baptist Church of Waynesboro will
present a Festival of Lessons and Carols with ser
vices at 6 p.m. this Sunday and 7 p.m. Monday.
“This very special time of worship during the
Advent season was begun in the late nineteenth
century when the bishop of Truro, F. W. Benson
developed the format with Scripture readings
supported by appropriate carols,” the Rev. A1
Wright said.
The Festival of Lessons and Carols was later
adapted for a Christmas Eve service at King’s
College in Cambridge and was popularized by
its broadcast by the BBC.
“It still stands today as a most significant
way of hearing through the reading of the Word
and the singing of the Word the simple and
sacred truths of the Advent and Christmas sea
son,” the Rev. Wright said. “No person who
attends this service will exit the service in the
same way they entered ... God brings a very
special blessing through this very special ser
vice.”
Monday’s service is FBC’s gift to the com
munity, and nursery will be provided both
nights.
