City takes over
garbage service
By Elizabeth Billips
lizbillips@yahoo.com
Waynesboro is back in the
garbage business.
Monday night, councilmen
decided not to renew their con
tract with Advance Disposal
and put city employees in
charge of collecting garbage
from more than 2,200
polycarts, dumpsters and con
tainers in Waynesboro.
City administrator Jerry
Coalson said Advance
Disposal’s service would cost
the city around $566,000 in
2009, and that 2010’s sched
uled 3 percent increase would
push it to nearly $583,000.
He believes the city can pro
vide the same service for
around $500,000 annually, and
that de-privatizing could bring
in at least $40,000 in revenue
annually the first few years.
Once the three-year note for
new equipment is paid off, the
figure could shoot past
$200,000.
Three Advance Disposal rep
resentatives also addressed city
council Monday night, armed
with a deal to reduce 2010’s
contract to $527,000 and lock
it in for a year.
“We will take the burden and
risk,” area sales manager Adam
Cochran told officials. “If gas
goes up to five dollars a gallon,
your contract will not go up.”
Council didn’t budge, and
Tuesday morning, Advance
Disposal came back with an of
fer city officials said they
couldn’t refuse - a five-year
contract at $460,000.
However, shortly after a ver
bal agreement was reached.
Advance Disposal backed out.
City officials are in the pro
cess of ordering nearly
$700,000 worth of start-up
equipment they’ll need when
they take over April 1.
Coalson said rates will re
main the same, and one new
local job will be created.
