Spartans improve to 4-1
ByTres Bragg
tresbragg @ bellsouth.net
After losing their first region
game of the season to Robert
Toombs, the Spartans responded
with back-to-back wins.
The Edmund Burke Academy
Spartans (4-1, 0-1) beat non-re
gion opponent David Emanuel
Academy 47-19 last week after
holding the Eagle offense to just
9 points during the first half. Se
nior Boyd Lively had a double
double night, scoring 25 points
and grabbing 15 rebounds. Alex
Sturkie scored 6 points for the
Spartans.
Edmund Burke won their
fourth game of the season Mon
day night in Sandersville. The
Spartans beat the Brentwood
Eagles 43-32 after their defense
held Brentwood to just 1 point
in the last quarter. EBA trailed
the entire game but scored 14
points in the third and fourth
quarters to pull off the comeback
victory.
Lively had his third double
double of the season with 15
points and 15 rebounds. Senior
Tyler Rowland had his best of
fensive game of the year.
Rowland scored 14 points dur
ing the game, 6 from behind the
arch.
Head coach Wes Parker was
pleased with the comeback.
“Brentwood ran a tough two-
three zone and at times doubled
our post players. Tyler hit two
three-pointers, which softened
up the zone so we could get the
ball back inside to our big guys,”
he said. The Spartans were able
to hold Brentwood to 11 second
half points while scoring 28 of
their own to take the win.
During EBA’s first region loss
to Robert Toombs, Lively was
the leading scorer for the fifth
game in a row. He scored 8 points
and picked up 11 rebounds.
Rowland scored 7 and Kyle Wil
son nailed 2 three-pointers.
“Our kids battled very hard the
entire game and never gave up,”
Parker said. “Turnovers hurt us
bad. But, I’m proud of our guys
for holding a very good team to
just forty-six points.” The Cru
saders scored 77, 73, 61 and 70
points during their first four
games of the season.
The Spartans will travel to
Lyons this weekend for the Rob
ert Toombs Invitational. They are
scheduled to play Terrell Acad
emy Friday at 9:30 p.m. They
will play Windsor Academy Sat
urday night. Tip-off is set for 7
p.m.

Lady Spartans look for first win
The Lady Spartans struggled last week, dropping three games in a row. Their first
region game of the season against Robert Toombs ended in a 59-25 loss. Amanda
Bragg was the leading scorer with 5 points. Carly Saxon picked up 6 rebounds for
the Lady Spartans. David Emanuel Academy handed the Lady Spartans their next
loss (43-18). N.C. Cates scored 8 points for EBA, and Lauren Bragg had 4. Saxon led
in rebounds with 10. Edmund Burke nearly captured their first win of the season
Monday night, when they traveled to Sandersville to take on Brentwood Academy.
After trailing by just 3 points at the end of the third quarter, the Lady Eagles scored
13 points in the fourth and held EBA to just 5. Brentwood took the 42-31 win. The
Lady Spartans had their best offensive game of the season against the Lady Eagles.
Hallie Murray led in scoring with 8, followed by N.C. Cates, Jennifer McDaniel, Bragg
and Saxon who each scored 4 points. Saxon picked up 9 rebounds, and Amber Bow
man grabbed 7. The Lady Spartans welcomed former standout, Katie Kittrell, who
will join head coach Ray Miller as a full time assistant for the rest of the season.
Kittrell and Miller will look to continue the improvements the Lady Spartans showed
during their game against Brentwood and pick up their first win of the season this
weekend at the Robert Toombs Invitational. “The girls are starting to push the ball up
the floor with a little more authority now,” Miller said. “We are rebounding the ball
now and using the speed of our guards to convert on fast-break opportunities,” he
added. The Lady Spartans will play Westminster 2:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 18, at the
Lyons City Gym and First Presbyterian Christian 1 p.m., Saturday. Above, Claire Rives
