Cheerleaders take top honors
Less than a month after be

the Edmund Burke Academy

have something else to cel
ebrate. They were selected
as overall grand-champions
in the Fellowship of Chris
tian Cheerleaders regional
competition in Marietta. The
event, which was held at the
Cobb County Civic Center,
featured 14 teams from
across the state. EBA won
the varsity co-ed classifica
tion title, just before hearing
the news that they also cap
tured the overall grand-
champion trophy. Pictured is

Bears undefeated after weekend wins

The Bears kicked off region
play with a big win over Baldwin
last Saturday to remain unde
feated on the basketball court and
ranked among the top-10 AAA
teams in Georgia.
Burke County High School’s
boys put Baldwin away 76-52 in
front of a large home crowd.
In a clear show of dominance,
the Bears held Baldwin to just 19
points in the first half and were
leading by 34 points at the end
of the third quarter.
“Any time you hold a region
opponent to nineteen points in a
half really says something about
the effort, especially defensively.
We just played really well,” head
coach Purvis Dukes said. “It was
a total team effort. We had some
guys shoot the basketball really
well.”
The Bears shot well all over the
court, hitting a season high of 7
three-pointers, with 5 of them in
the first half.
Junior Jacquez Rozier led in
scoring with 20 points while hit
ting a three-pointer along the
way. Senior Martaveous Smith
picked up his first triple-double
of the season. Smith scored 13
points and had rebounds and
blocks in double digits as well.
Junior Jahanas Harden scored
another 13 points, sinking his first
three shots in the game includ
ing 2 from the arch. He sank an
other three-pointer later in the
game.
Senior Dimitri Bell added 9
points and sank a shot from the
arch. The remaining 2 three-
pointers came courtesy of senior
Curtis Barber.
Coach Dukes said much of the
good seen on Saturday came
from a “wake-up call” the night
before. Last Friday, the Bears
squeezed a 72-67 win over
Screven County in Sylvania.
“Screven played us really well
and I felt like we did some things
that were not so sound,” Coach
Dukes said. “We were down at
the half for the first time all year.
We had to fight through some
adversity and defended a lot bet
ter down the stretch and got the
shots we wanted.”
Rozier led the Bears with 22
points, thanks to a second-half
attack. Foul trouble landed him
‘Tis the Time for a Tourney
The Bears will play in the Sweet South Classic in Madison next
week. The first game will be against Gadsden City out of Alabama
at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28. The outcome of that match up will
determine other game times.
Directions to Morgan Co. High:
Take Interstate 20 West to exit 114 - Madison. Turn Left off
the exit ramp. At first stop light, turn right. Turn left
onto East Avenue (will see elementary school). When the road
forks, bear to the right and look for high school on the right.
on the bench for most the first
half, when he only scored 2 of
those points.
Smith had another big night
with 18 points and Barber scored
14 points, thanks mostly to his 4
good shots from the arch.
Coach Dukes said his team
needs to do some work from the
foul line after Friday’s perfor
mance. pointing to 9 missed shots
of 14 in the fourth quarter.
Still, the Bears are off to a good
start, with four players averaging
double digits each game, and
hope to continue the momentum.
“Right now we’re playing
pretty good basketball. We just
have to keep the guys grounded
and help them understand this is
a marathon not a sprint,” Coach
Dukes said. "It’s still a work in
progress. We just have a lot of
guys who are playing well.”
Jacquez Rozier sends a ball back in bounds for the Bears.
