By Anne Marie Kyzer

A trustee who spent nearly a
week on the run after walking
away from the Burke County
Jail in July was sentenced last
week.
Jerry Lee Jones pleaded
guilty to felony charges of es
cape and terroristic threats and
misdemeanor charges of ob
struction of an officer and driv
ing without a license. Superior
Court Judge J. Carlisle
Overstreet sentenced him to
four years in jail.
The North Carolina man col
lected the latter three charges in
July 2008 after Waynesboro po
lice stopped Jones, who was in
toxicated and behind the wheel
of a stolen vehicle.
His female co-defendant
blamed the theft on Jones, and
he pointed the finger at her, as
sistant district attorney Philip
Catalano said.
After about a year in the
Burke County Jail, where Jones
served his time without inci
dent, he walked away while on
custodial work detail in the
sheriff’s office building. He was
apprehended more than a week
later at a Charlotte hospital
where he was visiting his girl
friend and charged with escape.
Upon Catalano’s request,
Judge Overstreet banned Jones
from the Augusta Judicial Cir
cuit, which includes Burke,
Richmond and Columbia coun
ties, upon his release due to his
significant criminal history.

A teenager who admitted to
holding up two pregnant clerks
at the Best Western and burglar
izing a Burke County home was
sent to jail for a decade.
James Byron Martin Jr., 17,
pleaded guilty last week to one
count each of armed robbery,
possession of a firearm during
the commission of a crime and
burglary. Superior Court Judge
J. Carlisle Overstreet sentenced
him to 10 years in prison fol

attorney’s office.
In Sept. 2008, Martin entered
the Best Western lobby wield

women to give him money from
the safe and register. An accom

The burglary occurred some
six months later in March 2009
when Martin and a 16-year-old
co-defendant broke into a resi
dence on Deerwood Drive and
stole guns, a video game station,
shoes and jewelry.
Some time later, Martin was
arrested when officers saw him
attempting to buy marijuana
while wearing shoes taken in the
burglary. The juvenile involved
in the burglary was also arrested.
While in custody, Martin admit

Best Western holdup.
Martin had no prior adult

A stolen track and Christmas presents were promptly recov
ered, thanks to the GPS on a stolen cell phone.
Monday, a buck was stolen from a home near the old Burke
Apothecary building, and two vehicles in Burkehaven were plun
dered. Among the stolen loot were the wrapped presents and
phone. Using the GPS system embedded in the phone,
Waynesboro police “pinged” it to a location near Walton Way in
Augusta and put Richmond County officers on alert for the ve
hicle.
It didn’t take long. “It was on the road, driving straight toward
them,” investigator Claude Wade said.
They not only found the track, but a collection of stolen mer
chandise and pieces of tom wrapping paper.
The 17-year-old driver, whose name hasn’t been released, was
arrested for theft by receiving stolen property, but officers say
they are looking for Burke County resident Kelly Dixon Jr., 44,
who they believe stole the track and also broke into a number of
cars on Jones Avenue last week. Anyone with information on his
whereabouts is asked to call 706-554-8029.
Free ride
A Waynesboro teen drammed up a false claim of a family
dispute in an effort to get a free hitch to town.
According to a report filed at the Burke County Sheriff’s Of
fice, 17-year-old Rashard Hughes was arrested Friday after depu
ties were dispatched to his home on Hometract Road.
The dispatcher said the teen called three times to report a fight
between his mother and brother but hung up each time she tried
to ask questions.
The boy’s mother, who was unaware of the calls, said her son
had been upset with her because she wouldn’t drive him into
Waynesboro. When questioned by a deputy, the boy stated that
he just wanted a ride to town and asked for a lift to “the station.”
He did get a ride, but to the Burke County Jail where he was
booked for false report of a crime.

Six people are facing criminal charges following mayhem in
the Wal-Mart parking lot.
According to a report filed at the Waynesboro Police Depart
ment, officers were first called Tuesday night to sort out an alter
cation inside the store involving two teenage girls. A short time
later, an argument broke out in the parking lot with about 30
people involved. Officers used pepper spray to disperse the crowd
and cited Shannon Gaines, 33, Brooke McBride, 20, Trade Scott,
41, a 15-year-old boy, and the two girls, ages 14 and 15, for
disorderly conduct.
Although police didn’t say what started the fight, a report filed
at the sheriff’s office earlier that day alleges that one of the girls
had been making false and malicious comments about the other
on Facebook.
Oh ... Christmas tree!
A spat at Briarwood Apartments put a crack in the holiday
spirit.
Police were dispatched to an apartment Sunday afternoon af
ter the tenant and male guest got into a fuss.
The argument ended when the guest picked up the tenant’s
Christmas tree and tossed it outside. Several ornaments were
broken but no one was hurt.
