Poacher, wife jailed for arson
By Elizabeth Billips

A hunter who had been jailed
for poaching on a private plan
tation owned by William S. Mor
ris III has been arrested for set
ting fire to the media giant’s
hunting cabin, lodge and historic
depot.
GBI agents arrested Jerry L.
Harden, 39, of Martinez, for two
counts of arson on Friday -
nearly 13 months after
firefighters in Burke and
Screven counties found the three
buildings engulfed in flames on
Millhaven and Wade planta
tions. The structures were lo
cated about a mile apart on the
two plantations, which both
stretch across
the two coun
ties and are
owned by
companies af
filiated with
Morris Com
munications.
About three
weeks before
the Nov. 2008 fires, Harden and
two other hunters were arrested
by DNR rangers for illegally
killing three bucks on Millhaven
Plantation.
At the time,
rangers said
the three men
accessed the
plantation via
boat on Brier
Creek. Later,
the deer car
casses were re
covered from
one of their vehicles, minus the
backstraps and antlers, which
had been sawed off.
All three men were convicted,
and Harden, who pleaded guilty
in July, was banished from
Screven County for two years
and given a $500 fine.
Officers say Harden has been
a suspect in the arson case since
early in the investigation. His
wife, Linda Louise Harden, who
was also implicated in both ar
son cases, turned herself in at the
Burke County Jail on Monday.

Correction
Two charged in Gough burglary
By Elizabeth Billips
lizbillips@yahoo.com
Deputies arrested a 15-year-
old and a previously convicted
burglar in
connection to
a Dec. 1 bur
glary on
Phillips Street
in Gough.
Tyrone
Waltower, 39,
who lives just
down the road
from the bur-
g 1 a r i z e d
home, was
jailed Tues
day afternoon
following a
tip from a relative of the teen
ager. According to a report filed
at the Burke County Sheriff’s
Office, the teen later admitted
to helping break into the resi
dence and acting as a look-out
while Waltower went in and
stole a cell phone and video
game.
Waltower, who has served
time for numerous crimes in
cluding a Jefferson County bur
glary, was just released from
prison in February 2009. He is
also charged with parole viola
tion.
Deputies continue to look for
Carl Lee “Buck” Butler, 35,
who is wanted for a recent bur
glary on Marks-Walden Road.
Over the past week, deputies
and Waynesboro police reported
seven more burglaries.
Police responded to a break-
in on Baduly Street and an at
tempted break-in at Burkehaven
Comer Store.
Deputies were called to James
Street in Midville, Highway 23
South, Cates Mead Road, High
way 305 near Keysville, Gough
Spur Road and Highway 25
North near Hephzibah.
A Cates Mead Road home-
owner and Fair Field Baptist
Church member also reported
the theft of copper wiring from
air conditioning units, and a
Greens Cut Church Road resi
dent reported that his three units
were stolen. A neighbor in the
latter case saw a small green
Ford Ranger leaving property
with a small black utility trailer
in tow. The neighbor said the
Ranger was missing its tailgate
and was driven by a white male
who appeared to be in his mid-
40s.
Nearly 450 burglaries have
been reported to deputies and
police this year, resulting in
more than 80 arrests in connec
tion with them. Quite a few sus
pects are charged with multiple
burglaries, and a number of the
suspects are teenagers.

Elderly woman robbed during home invasion
By Elizabeth Billips
lizbillips@yahoo.com
An elderly woman was held
at gunpoint and robbed during
a home invasion.
Around 10:30 p.m. Monday,
the 84-year-old old victim was
doing laundry in her Highway
25 North home when two uni
dentified men kicked in the
door.
According to Sgt. Matt
Raulerson, an investigator at the
Burke County Sheriff’s Office,
one man held the woman at gun
point while the other went room
to room and ransacked the
house.
The gunman also demanded
money but the victim told him
she’d spent it all on prescription
medications.
The men fled after closing the
woman in a back room and
making off with a piggy bank,
numerous rolls of quarters, an
engraved Burke County High
School class ring and other
items.
While the woman never got a
look at the robber who ran
sacked her house, the gunman
was described as around 5 feet,
6 inches tall, black, slender and
wearing a long black jacket,
gloves and a black cap. His face
was covered with what is be
lieved to be a child’s shirt.
Anyone with information is
asked to call investigators at
706-554-2133. Tips in the case
may qualify for a reward
through the county’s $10,000
fund.
Due to a reporter’s error, incorrect information was included
in an article last week entitled “Parolee wanted for burglary.”
The story stated that burglary suspect Carl Lee Butler, had
previously dated the victim when, in fact, he had dated a neigh
boring homeowner. The True Citizen regrets this error.
Boys hurt in ATV/
18-wheeler collision
By Elizabeth Billips
lizbillips@yahoo.com
Troopers say two teenagers are
lucky to be alive after their four-
wheeler collided with an 18-
wheeler.
Harry Bruce Redd, 15, and
Clarence Overstreet III, 17, were
hospitalized with contusions and
fractures following the wreck on
Highway 24 in Sardis on Monday.
According to Georgia State Pa
trol Trooper Ricky Rice, the boys
were traveling on Ellison Bridge
Road when they stopped at the
intersection but then pulled in
front of an oncoming tractor-
trailer.
“The driver was going slow and
was able to steer away,” Trooper
Rice said. “If he had been speed
ing at all, this would have been a
fatality.”
Sardis police say Redd, who
was driving, suffered a broken
collarbone, and Overstreet had
several serious injuries including
a broken leg and possible frac
tured vertebrae.
An MCGHeatlh spokesperson
said Redd is in good condition at
the Children’s Medical Center,
and Overstreet has since been re
leased.
Trooper Price said Redd will be
cited on several charges includ
ing driving an ATV on a state high
way.
