Waynesboro police are look

the trigger at least four times
inside a house full of children.
Joe "Popeye” Bernard
Hughes, 36, has been wanted
since early Sunday morning
when he allegedly opened fire
inside a Pilgrim Way home.
Police say Desmond Holmes,
24, was hit in the buttocks and
was transported to MCGHealth
with bullet fragments embedded
in his colon and significant in
ternal damage.
According to Chief Investiga

dozen people who were playing
cards and listening to music in
what he called an “all-nighter.”
Holmes had shown up at the
house to visit his small child
when he got into a heated argu

“Desmond decided to walk
off, but Hughes went outside
and got a small caliber gun and
started firing,” Investigator
Boseman said.
Four babies were sleeping in
a nearby bedroom, and one
round penetrated the wall and
hit a playpen.
Hughes ran from the scene
and is wanted on a number of
felony charges including aggra
vated assault and possession of
a firearm by a convicted felon.

On Jan. 1, Georgia’s new “Super Speeder Law” goes into ef
fect, along with tougher fines for "high risk” drivers.
In addition to regular tickets, speeders will have to pay an ex- www.gema.ga.gov.
tra $200 fee if they are caught driving 75 mph or more on any
two-lane road or highway or 85 mph or more on any type of
Georgia roadway.
Lawmakers say HB160 was passed in an effort to decrease
Georgia’s “death-a-day” caused by speed-related motor vehicle
accidents.
On that same note, fees collected under the new law will help
fund Georgia’s trauma care hospital system where approximately
60 percent of the patients are being treated for crash-related ac
cidents.
