Bears down neighboring rival
By Anne Marie Kyzer
annemariek@thetruecitizen.com
Another win last Saturday night
propelled the Bears to a 7-1 record
this season.
Burke County High School’s
boys basketball team defeated
neighboring Jefferson County 62-
58 in Waynesboro.
Though Jefferson County threat
ened several times, the Bears held
them off for a hard-fought win.
“Jefferson County played well
and I felt like we responded to the
challenge,” Bears head coach
Purvis Dukes said.
Three Bears posted points in
double digits. The team was led by
junior Jacquez Rozier, who put 26
points on the board and hit a three-
pointer along the way. Seniors
Curtis Barber and Martaveous
Smith each scored 11, and Barber
sank three shots from the arch.
Coach Dukes said the only
drawback was that the Bears didn’t
take advantage of opportunities
from the foul line to really pull
ahead.
“The fourth quarter of the game
we missed seven foul shots, which
was a bit disappointing,” he said.
“I felt we had worked hard to get
in position to be in the bonus but
didn’t capitalize from the foul
line.”
Still, the Bears have logged win
after win this season and have
good momentum as they enter a
stretch with several big region
ballgames.
“The guys are working ex
tremely hard and play together,
which is very positive this time of
season,” Coach Dukes said.
Their only loss came just after
Christmas during the Sweet South
Classic played in Madison. The
Bears lost by merely 3 points to
the No. 5 ranked team in
Alabama’s Class AAAAAA,
Gadsden City High School.
The Bears wrapped up the tour
nament last Wednesday with a 62-
54 win over Douglas County, a
AAAA school near Atlanta.
Rozier also led in that game with
18 points, followed by Smith and
junior Steffon Jones who each had
11. Barber was also in double dig
its with 10 points.
Coach Dukes called Douglas
County a tough opponent but said
the tournament was good for the
team.
“The experience of playing
against tough competition and the
fact that the games were all on the
road should help us during region
play,” he said.
The Bears will see plenty of re
gion action this weekend when
they travel to Richmond Hill Fri
day and host Liberty County Sat
urday.

This marks the second sea

After a long Christmas break,
the Spartans started the new year
off with a win.
Edmund Burke (6-2,0-1) beat
neighboring Thomas Jefferson
Academy 52-22 Monday night
at Murray Gym. The Spartans
dominated from tip-off and held
the Jaguars to just 2 points dur
ing the first quarter. At the half,
the Spartans led 27-10.
Boyd Lively continued to
show strength defensively and
offensively for Edmund Burke.
He racked up 20 points during
the win and snatched 10 boards.
His double-double night marked
his sixth of the season in just
eight total games.
Kyle Wilson also had a big
night for the Spartans. He had
three steals and nailed three shots
from behind the arch, marking
his highest scoring game of the
season. Tyler Rowland and Clay
Wilson also sank three-pointers.
Rowland had 8 points for the
night.
Head coach Wes Parker was
satisfied with the way his team
performed. “I thought our guys
were mentally checked in to the
game,” he said. “They didn’t let
being out of school throw them
off. They are starting to under
stand the importance of prepar
ing mentally for teams, which
will be valuable to us late in the
season.
The Lady Spartans fell to the
Lady Jags Monday night 41-23.
Ashley Chambers and Hallie
Murray led Edmund Burke with
6 points each. Carly Saxon re
covered 8 rebounds and had 4
points for the night.
“I’m proud of the girls for bat
tling regardless of the score,”
head coach Ray Miller said. “Ev
eryone who played continued to
battle right until the final buzzer.
I can’t complain about that.”
The Spartans and Lady Spar
tans played a non-region game
yesterday (Tuesday) at
Briarwood Academy. However,
results weren’t available at press
time.
Edmund Burke will begin a
long stretch of region games be
ginning Friday night. They play
Frederica Academy on Friday,
Memorial Day School on Satur
day and Curtis Baptist on Tues
day. All of the game will be
away.
