Burke Happenings
Mrs. Mildred Jernigan Burke
Mildred Jernigan Burke, age
89, of Greensboro, Ga., died
Friday, Jan. 1, 2010 at Boswell
Parker Nursing Center in
Greens
boro. She
was a na
tive of
Rowland,
N.C.,but
had lived
in Greene
County
most of her
life.
Funeral
services were held on Monday,
Jan. 4, 2010 at 2 p.m. at
McCommons Chapel with the
Rev. Dr. James Choomack and
the Rev. Stephen Jackson offi
ciating.
Interment followed at Greens
boro City Cemetery.
Born on July 31, 1920, she
was the daughter of the late
Lyde Miller Jernigan and Lena
Gainey Jernigan. She graduated
from Vidette, Georgia High
School and in 1941 married Roy
Franklin Burke Sr. in Burke
County, Ga. They moved to Due
West, S.C., where Mr. Burke
finished his education. His first
principal and teaching job was
in Siloam, Ga., and later in
Greensboro where she has lived
ever since.
Mildred worked with Hazel
Turner at McDonald’s Dress
Shop in Greensboro and was a
member of the First Presbyte
rian Church of Greensboro.
She was preceded in death by
her husband, Roy Franklin
Burke Sr. on Dec. 26, 1958; a
daughter. Sue Burke Rayburn in
June of 2008; a son, Roy
Franklin Burke Jr. on Aug. 23,
2000; a great grandson, Dustin
Newsome; and siblings, Marga
ret Mabry, Alton Jernigan and
Sonny Jernigan who was killed
in World War II, while serving
in the U.S. Navy.
She is survived by a daugh
ter, Jane Burke Epps of Greens
boro; a sister, Clara J. Jackson
of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers,
John Jernigan of Norfolk, Va.,
and Bill Jernigan of South Hill,
Va.; nine grandchildren, Justin
Epps and wife Rebecca, April
Burke, Robbie Burke, Richie
Burke, Benjamin Burke, James
Burke, Ken Rayburn Jr. and
wife Valerie, Jennie Rayburn
and Laura Marht; 15 great
grandchildren, Lanie Epps Pen
tecost, Tristan Epps, Richard
Burton, Ellisa Burke, Brittany
Burke, Jo Burke, Samantha
Burke, Christopher Burke,
Javen Burke, Cloe Burke,
MacKenzie Burke, Katie Burke,
Jacob Burke, Donavon Burke
and Kayla Rayburn; numerous
nieces, nephews, other relatives
and friends.
Serving as pallbearers were
Justin Epps, Ken Rayburn Jr.,
James Burke, Paul Hughes, Paul
Hughes Jr. and Richard Burton.
The family received friends
from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3
at the Funeral Home.

tered into rest Thursday, Dec.
31, 2009 at University Hospital
in Augusta, Ga..
Funeral services were held at
2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010 at
Rosemont Heights Baptist
Church, Waynesboro.
The Rev. Keith Alderman
officiated. Interment followed at
Burke Memorial Gardens,
Waynesboro.
Born in Richmond County on
Nov. 17, 1927, he was a son of
the late Fred Sullivan
Blackstone and Viola Inglett
Blackstone.
After many years of service,
he retired from Babcock &
Wilcox in Hephzibah, Ga. Mr.
Blackstone was an avid hunter
and fisherman who thoroughly
enjoyed the outdoors.
He was preceded in death by
his first wife, Nettie Mae
Perkins Blackstone, his second
wife, Betty Stewart Blackstone,
and several brothers and sisters.
He is survived by seven chil
dren, Joseph Patrick Blackstone
Jr., of Waynesboro, Jeffery E.
Blackstone (Judy), of
Hephzibah, Michael Stewart
(Donna), of Richmond Hill,
Ga., Carla Cobb, Mickey
Stewart (Sandra), Terri
Williford (Tommy), all of
Waynesboro, and Jerrell Bailey
(John), of Douglas, Ga.; sib
lings, Mellie Morris, of Or
lando, Fla., Ruth Perry, of
Waynesboro, George Black
stone of Hephzibah and Hattie
B. Moore (Glenn), of
Waynesboro; nine grandchil
dren; four great grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.
The family received friends
from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 2,
at DeLoach-McKerley Funeral
Home.
Pallbearers were Josh
Blackstone, Jeremy Blackstone,
Chris Stewart, Bill Cobb, Bobby
Cobb and Jamey Williford. The
family and pallbearers were
asked to assemble at the church
by 1:30 p.m.
Flowers are being accepted,
however, memorials may be
made to Hephzibah Baptist
Church, P.O. Box 175,
Hephzibah, GA. 30815.
