State troopers are looking for
a driver who ran from the scene
of violent wreck that caused two
injuries and power loss at more
than 100 homes.
According to officers, the uni

to pass a car occupied by Ann
and Grant Young, both of
Waynesboro, Monday night but
ended up smashing into the
driver side when Mrs. Young
attempted a left turn off High
way 56 North onto Bates Road.
Trooper Bruce Rowell said
the wreckage ended up in the
yard of nearby home where wit
nesses said the man got out of
his car and ran.
The wreck was called in
around 11:30 p.m., and about a
half-hour later a woman called
Waynesboro police and said her
rental car, which matched the
one abandoned at the wreck
scene, had been stolen from
outside a Jones Avenue home.
According to Major Bennett,
investigators are looking into
her claim and examining
records of cell phone calls made
between her and her boyfriend
around the time of the accident.
The Youngs were transported

PUBLIC NOTICE
CITY OF SARDIS
You are hereby notified that the City of Sardis wastewater
treatment facility reports that there was a major spill at our
facility. The approximate dates of the spill began Monday,
December 21 st , around 2:00 A.M. through Tuesday 22 nd , 2009
at 8:00 A.M. Questions may be directed to Mayor John T.
Hamilton. Our facility is located on Ellison Bridge Road,
Burke County, Georgia. Creeks that may be impacted by
the spill are Chandler Mill, Brier Creek and Jenkins’ Pond.
Monitoring will consist of taking samples upstream and
downstream of the spill and testing for dissolved oxygen
(DO) concentration and fecal coliform bacteria, pH and
temperature. Estimated spill volume was less than 35,000
gallons. The cause for the spill is a result of pump failure at
the Lift Station. To mitigate or reduce the adverse affects of
the spill, personnel of the City of Sardis shall broadcast
lime, so that the sewer run-off scours across the lime and
increases the pH.
