After running all over Rich
mond Hill Friday night, the
Bears suffered their first region
loss of the season Saturday.
Burke County High School’s
boys basketball team (8-2) de
feated Richmond Hill 55-34.
After a slow start in the first
quarter, the Bears worked up to
a 9-point lead at the half. Sharp
shooting and plenty of pressure
on Richmond Hill’s offense
helped them tear away in the
third and fourth quarters.
Bears head coach Purvis
Dukes applauded the team’s
success from the foul line, es
pecially Jahanas Harden, who
was 4 for 4, and Curtis Barber,
who sank 7 of 8.
Jacquez Rozier led the Bears
in scoring with 21 points and
Barber followed with 12.
Dimitri Bell added another 7.
The following night, the
Bears took on the highest
ranked team in the region. Lib
erty County.
Liberty County, who entered
the match-up 16-0, had the
Bears down by 15 points at the
half. The Bears nearly fought
back for the win, outscoring the
Panthers 41-33 in the second
half and pulling within 3 points.
But Liberty County’s surge in
the last minute of the game
sealed their win.
“I was pleased with the kids’
performance, especially the sec
ond half. It was a big region
contest with both teams coming
in undefeated in region play and
Liberty was undefeated over
all,” Coach Dukes said. “We Martaveous Smith. The 6 foot,
challenged the guys to come out 10 inch center sat out the week-
and above all else play hard. We end games due to eye surgery
were definitely pleased with the but should return to action by
effort but not the end result.” Friday when Burke County
In both games, the Bears takes on two more region op-

Lady Spartans pick up two big wins
McDaniel beats buzzer with game-winning three
ByTres Bragg
tresbragg@bellsouth.net
After a tough loss to non-re
gion opponent Briarwood Acad
emy last week the Lady Spartans
recovered with back to back re
gion victories.
EBA traveled to St. Simons
last Friday to take on region foe
Frederica Academy in their sec
ond region match of the season.
The game ended in dramatic
fashion when sophomore Jenni
fer McDaniel sank the winning
three-pointer as time expired.
McDaniel led the Lady Spartans
with 9 points. She also recovered
4 rebounds and had 2 steals for
the night.
Senior Carly Saxon also had
a big night for the Lady Spar
tans. She had a season high 9
points and led in rebounds with
7. N.C. Cates had 8 points dur
ing the game and Ashley Bow
man followed with 6.
Head coach Ray Miller was
thrilled after his team’s first re
gion win. “This was one of the
most exciting games I’ve seen
in a long time,” he said after the
emotional win. "The girls battled
the entire 32 minutes and trailed
by six points with just over two
minutes left in the game.” I’m
proud of all the girls,” he added.
Miller noted that Saxon kept
Edmund Burke in the game by
racking up 7 points in the fourth
quarter alone, including hitting
all three of her crucial free throw
attempts.
The following night, Edmund
Burke traveled to Savannah to
play Memorial Day School and
captured their second region vic
tory. The Lady Matadors were
no threat to EBA from tip-off as
the Lady Spartans ran away with
the 44-16 win.
Ansleigh Dickey had a huge
performance on the court. She
picked up 2 steals, had 3 assists
and scored a Lady Spartan sea
son high, 18 points. Cates also
scored a season best, 11 points
and nearly captured a double
double night with 8 rebounds.
“Just eighteen hours after last
night’s win, the girls came out
ready to play,” coach Miller said.
“Our defensive pressure limited
the Lady Matadors to only six
field goals for the entire game.
We had a great weekend and our
offense finally began to click,”
he added.
EBA will have a rematch
against Memorial this Saturday
at home beginning at 2 pm. They
will welcome non-region oppo
nent John Hancock next Tues
day. Tip-off is set for 6:30 pm.
The Lady Spartans played a re
gion game against Curtis Bap
tist yesterday (Tuesday) but re
sults weren’t available at press
time.
