Lady Bears disappointed
by narrow loss to Liberty

The Lady Bears are looking for
region wins this weekend to
bring an end to a disappointing
streak.
Burke County High School’s
girls basketball team (4-12)
dropped two games last week to
Richmond Hill and Liberty
County.
The girls lost to Richmond Hill
61-43 and dropped a close game
to Liberty County 73-66.
On Friday, Antomia Walker led
the Lady Bears with 17 points,
followed by Eddriss Miles with
14.
On Saturday, Miles led Burke
County with 21 points, followed
by Shonterious Williams with 17
and Walker with 14.
Head coach Angelica Collins
said the Lady Bears, who are
starting three freshmen, are sim
ply hindered by inexperience.
“I think our limited ability and
inexperience are hindering us
from winning the close ones,”
she said. “We are playing hard
in spurts. There is no consistency
amongst the team or individual
players; however, my girls real
ize that they have to step up to
the plate and work individually
on their game, and we can pull it
all together as a team.”
Coach Collins called the team
a “good group of young ladies”
and said she thinks they will
come around in time.
“It’s just tough when you have
to start and depend on three
freshmen to carry the team
(Trelinda Little, Alexus Gordon
and Shonterious Williams),” she
said. “These three freshmen are
starting, at this point, and finish
ing the game.”
Coach Collins said her team
continues to work hard and hopes
to see that effort pay off soon.
“My job is to continue to en
courage my girls, and that, I will
do,” she said. ”1 am their biggest
fan, and I will continue to have
confidence in them.”
Freshman Shonterious Williams scored 17 points against Liberty County Saturday night.
Six-point losses plague Spartans

Edmund Burke (8-4, 0-3)
suffered back-to-back six-point
losses on the court last week,
both to region opponents.
The Spartans started the
week off with a 50-40 win
against non-region opponent
Briarwood Academy. During
the win, three Spartans scored
in double digits, and senior
Boyd Lively narrowly missed
his seventh double-double of
the season. He scored 12 points
and stacked up 9 rebounds.
Alex Sturkie led in scoring
(along with Lively) with 12
points. He recorded 4 rebounds
and had 7 steals during the
game. Kyle Wilson also scored
in double digit figures with 11
points.
Edmund Burke started a
stretch of region games last
Saturday when they traveled to
St. Simons and battled
Frederica Academy. The game
was close from tip-off until the
final buzzer, when the Spartans
eventually fell short 56-50.
Lively did pull off the double
double this time, recording 13
points and 10 rebounds. Foul
trouble kept Lively on the
bench for nearly the entire sec
ond half, but head coach Wes
Parker said several players
stepped up. “It was tough when
I had to sit Boyd out after three
first-half fouls,” Parker said.
“But, Dawson (Atkinson) and
Matt (Cowart) came off the
bench and combined for thir
teen points. Those guys did a
great job.”
The following night, the
Spartans traveled to Savannah
and battled Memorial Day
School in front of a hostile
crowd. Like the night before,
the Spartans came up just short
and were outlasted by six
points, 59-53. “Full court pres
sure got to us early in the
game,” coach Parker said.
“But, we handled it a lot better
in the second half and had a
good run in the fourth quarter
after trailing by eleven points.
It just wasn’t enough.”
Lively picked up yet another
double-double, marking his
eighth of the season. He scored
20 points and brought down 12
rebounds. Sturkie also had an
other big night in scoring, tal
lying 11 points. Senior Tyler
Rowland scored 12 points, all
of them from behind the arch.
The Spartans will get a sec
ond chance at Memorial Satur
day at home. Game time is set
for 3:30 p.m. They will play a
non-region match against John
Hancock next Tuesday at
Murray Gym. Tip-off is at 6:30
p.m. Edmund Burke traveled to
Augusta yesterday (Tuesday)
for a region battle against
Curtis Baptist but results
weren’t available at press time.
