In his absence, Mayor Pro Tem Scotty Womack will step up as
the head of the city’s government.

For the first time in 50 years, a state-owned property in Burke
County will be named for a local resident.
The stables at Di-Lane Wildlife Management Area will be dedi
cated to the late Lamar Mobley tomorrow (Thursday) during a
special ceremony at noon.
State and local officials as well as longtime field trial enthusi
asts and members of Mobley’s family plan to be on hand to honor
his contributions to a sporting tradition in Burke County.
The 39-stall horse bam, along with a check-in station and meet
ing facility, were built at Di-Lane in 2008 by the state with the
help of local funds and private contributions. The new facility
was needed in order to continue holding the Georgia Field Trials
Association’s professional stakes there after the old barns were
condemned.
Local leaders and many in the field trial community later initi
ated a movement to have the stables named for Mobley.
Last year, the General Assem
bly approved a resolution intro
duced by Senator J.B. Powell,
who represents Burke County,
to name the stables for Mobley.
Mobley’s widow, Nell, called
the dedication a rare honor.
“You don’t have a building
named for an individual every
day,” she said. "I can’t help but
feel very humbled.”
She added that Jan. 8 would
have marked her husband’s 70 th
birthday, so the timing is even
more significant to her.
All community members are
invited to attend the dedication
ceremony at Di-Lane Thursday
and are encouraged to stay for
lunch.
IN THE FIELD
The field trials at Di-Lane
started back today (Wednesday)
with the Georgia Derby Classic,
which will include around two
dozen dogs under the age of 2.
On Friday, judges will begin
watching dogs in the Georgia
Open Shooting Dog Champion
ship, which should attract nearly
100 entries.
Trainers and their dogs as well
as spectators along for the ride
should enjoy milder temperatures
this week. The mercury was hov
ering around 18 degrees when
the first brace struck out one
morning last week.

Waynesboro will be the first stop in the Swine Soiree - the first
ever triple-crown for Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) sanc
tioned events in Georgia-Carolina.
For teams on the hunt for the $6,000 purse, the May 7-8 Boss
Hog State Championship Cook-off in Waynesboro is the first of
three sanctioned competitions.
Next comes Papa Joe’s Banjo-B-Que, May 28-29, at the Hip
podrome in North Augusta, S.C., followed by the Festival of Dis
covery, July 8-10, in Greenwood, S.C. The latter event will be
featured this Sunday at 8 p.m., on the Food Networks’ premier of
the Great American BBQ Showdown.
The episode will also feature Chatham Artillery BBQ of out
Savannah and Bub-ba-Que of Jasper - both top contenders in
last year’s Boss Hog.
According to organizers, the Swine Soiree’s prize money will
be paid out to the top-three
teams, based on cumulative
points scored in the chicken,
ribs, pork and brisket competi
tions of all three events.
The entry fee is $25, and the
winner takes home $3,000 cash.
Between the three events and
the triple-crown, teams will be
competing for more than
$60,000.
THE BOSS
Applications for the Boss Hog
Cook-off went online Friday, and
already five of the 36 spots have
