Violent robber sent to jail
By Anne Marie Kyzer
annemariek@thetruecitizen.com
A man who was charged
with two robberies in Burke
County has been sentenced to
nearly two decades in prison.
George Michael Hinton, 37,
was charged in a string of vio
lent crimes that spanned from
Burke County to Evans County
below Statesboro.
He was arrested last June fol
lowing a spree that started
when he reportedly robbed a
Highway 25 North homeowner
at knife point after asking to
use his restroom. The follow
ing night he allegedly broke
into the Highway 305 home of
an elderly woman. He held
what she thought was a gun to
her neck and forced two oth
ers in the home to lie face
down on the floor while he
made off with credit cards,
cash and other items before
driving away in her Ford se
dan.
Hinton then made his way
south to Evans County where
he committed two armed rob
beries. Authorities appre
hended Hinton days later in a
hotel room in Register.
Though Hinton has yet to an
swer to his charges in Burke
County, he entered guilty pleas
in Evans County last Friday.
Hinton pleaded guilty to two
counts each of armed robbery
and aggravated assault and one
count each of burglary, crimi
nal trespass and hindering an
emergency telephone call. One
count of kidnapping with
bodily injury was dropped in
the plea negotiation. Superior
Court Judge Robert L. Russell
III sentenced Hinton to 18
years in prison followed by 22
years of probation.
In Burke County, Hinton still
faces counts of armed robbery,
burglary, kidnapping, two
counts of false imprisonment
and theft of a motor vehicle.
Suspected rapist charged in Sardis
By Elizabeth Billips

An Augusta man has been ar
rested for an attempted rape in
Sardis, nearly a year after the
fact.
Albert Lee Ellison Jr., 22, was
arrested at the Richmond
County Jail on Saturday in con
nection with a November 2008
incident which Sardis police
say could have ended badly had
a local businessman and a
Methodist preacher not inter
vened.
According to Sardis Police
Chief John Finley, Ellison ap
proached a woman walking on
Highway 24 and repeatedly
asked her for cigarettes.
Although she told him she
didn’t smoke, he followed her
through downtown Sardis and
began exposing and groping
himself. The woman became
frightened when he continued
to follow her down neighbor
hood streets and ran into the
yard of a local merchant where
she yelled for help.
Chief Finley said the busi
nessman, along with the Meth
odist preacher who’d heard the
commotion, chased Ellison into
the park and held him until po
lice arrived. He was charged
with disorderly conduct and re
leased.
Nine days later, Ellison was
arrested in Augusta when he al
legedly abducted and raped a
Georgia Power employee who
was taking out the trash at a
Walton Way office.
Because of similarities in the
cases, the disorderly conduct
charge in Sardis has since been
changed to criminal attempt to
commit rape.
In Richmond County, Ellison
was indicted for rape and kid
napping with bodily harm; but
according to a spokesperson
from the district attorney’s of
fice, his case is on hold await
ing a court ordered mental
evaluation at Georgia Regional.
On Friday, he was extradited
to Waynesboro and is being
held at the Burke County Jail.
Man gets probation for taking employer’s truck
By Anne Marie Kyzer
annemarie@thetruecitizen.com
A man who borrowed his
employer’s pickup truck for a
few hours without permission
was sentenced to five years
probation.
Jonathan James Frazier
pleaded guilty Monday to one
count each of criminal trespass
and theft by taking for the
March 2008 incident.
According to assistant dis
trict attorney Kim Easterling,
Frazier’s employer called au
thorities when he discovered
the truck missing from the shop
where it had been locked in
side. When a deputy contacted
Frazier, he returned the truck.
Defense attorney Ben Jack-
son explained that Frazier, who
had worked for the owner for
two years, had received per
mission to use a piece of weld
ing equipment from the shop
and used the work truck to haul
it to his home. He already had
a key to the gate to the prop
erty for work purposes and
simply jimmied the shop door
handle to open it.
“He didn’t kick it in or break
it or anything,” Jackson said,
noting that Frazier left his own
vehicle at the shop while he
drove the truck.
In addition to the five years
probation, Superior Court
Judge Carl C. Brown required
Frazier to pay a $ 1,000 fine and
$45 restitution for the fuel he
used while driving the truck.
