EBA tennis coaches attend clinic
Edmund Burke Academy tennis coaches, Carol Hogan and Marilyn Evans attended a USTATennis Coaches Workshop
on Sept. 10th held at the University of Georgia. Approximately 35 coaches from around the state participated, repre
senting both public and private schools. The workshop was organized by Robin Dawson, USTA Georgia representative
along with Coach Manny Diaz, UGA Head Tennis Coach. Bill Dopp and Mark Suiter, USTA Georgia Service Represen
tatives, assisted Mike Woody, USTA National Pro from Michigan, in heading up the workshop. The coaches partici
pated in hands-on drills and learned valuable strategies which can be used in their school tennis programs. Edmund
Burke Academy is a No-Cut Tennis Team Member which allows students the opportunity to play the sport without
being cut from the team. Last year, EBA’s team consisted of 25 student athletes.
On your mark
The future looks bright for Edmund Burke’s cross country team. Head Coach Ray Miller has organized a team of
elementary school runners to participate in several races this season in hopes of increasing interest in the sport
as the students approach high school. Edmund Burke’s high school team only has a select few on the team and
Miller is hoping to see a big increase in participants in the near future. Pictured are Miller and members of the
elementary cross country team as well as some of the high school team members as they begin practice.
Lady Bears record first region loss
Submitted by Larry Keller
BCHS Softball Head Coach
The Lady Bears dropped two
games this week, including their
first defeat in a region contest.
They fell to Cross Creek 16-1
last Tuesday in Augusta and lost
to Grovetown 15-9 later in the
week.
“We can’t give up double
digit runs and expect to compete
with quality teams.” Lady Bears
head coach Larry Keller said.
Burke County compounded
physical errors with a number of
mental mistakes against the
Lady Razorbacks of Cross
Creek.
An RBI double by Sequoia
Dixon brought in Char’De
Washington in the first inning,
resulting in the Lady Bears’ only
run. A bright spot on defense
was Nicole Rachels’ catch and
subsequent throw to third to
double up a runner and end the
first inning.
Thursday’s game against
Grovetown was all too similar.
Errors and mental lapses found
the girls down 15-4 going into
the bottom of the seventh inning.
Nonetheless, Coach Keller
said his players never gave up
and made the final out with the
bases loaded to fall 15-9.
Lady Bears who recorded hits
included Washington and
Alexus Gordon with 3 each, and
Bailee Adkins, Dixon, Hillary
Frazier and Amanda Chapman
with 2 each.
Burke will play Tuesday at
Washington County and finish
the regular season with home
games next Monday and Tues
day against Aquinas and Butler.
The Lady Bears will honor
their seniors, Washington,
Chapman, Jessica Jennings,
Taylor Tidwell and Frazier, at
Tuesday’s game.
