Saliva solved the case.
DNA testing confirmed the suspicions of Burke County
investigators and led to another charge against a local teen.
Markeith Golphin, 18, was already being held at the
Burke County Jail on two burglary indictments. He is now
charged with a third.
According to Sgt. Dan Lowe of the Burke County
Sheriffs Office, all three of the charges arc connected to
a Sweetwater Road Duplex which was broken into three
times last spring.

While no one has been arrested for the first break-in,
Golphin and 18-year-old Kendrick Carter were jailed with
the second one after investigators recovered stolen items from
the apartments.
Deputies also suspected the pair in the third burglary but
lacked evidence for an arrest.
According to Sgt. Lowe, the apartment was ransacked and
the offenders mixed drinks with the owner’s Crown Royal
and Coke.
In Golphin’s case, the evidence surfaced this week when
saliva lifted from a discarded can matched an oral swab col
lected after his first arrest.

A Bartlett Drive burglary culminated with an arrest
after the teenage suspect was caught with a stolen gun.
Kevin Lamont Bolding, 19, was arrested by
Waynesboro police last Tuesday after a huge distur
bance in the Pecan Grove subdivision.
According to police, a crowd of more than 150 gath
ered as a series of conflicts broke out between two
groups of juveniles and young men - some living in
the subdivision, and others, like Bolding, in neighbor
ing areas.
Residents pointed police to Bolding and 18-year-old
Anthony Ford, both Blakeney Street residents, and said
they were passing a gun back and forth.

Just before his arrest. Bolding dropped a .380 cali
ber handgun and magazine that had both been reported
stolen from a Sept. 5 burglary on Bartlett Drive.
Both Bolding and Ford were charged with reckless
conduct, pointing a firearm at another and disorderly
conduct. A number of adults were also cited for disor
derly conduct, police said.
Meanwhile, officers from the Burke County Sheriff’s
Office continue to investigate the burglary for which
Boland was also additionally charged.
Besides the handgun, the burglars took an Xbox,
laptop, iPod and around $140 in ammunition after they
smashed in a glass door.
According to Sgt. Dedric Smith, at least three other
people are believed to have been involved.

The Waynesboro Police of
ficer arrested for racing has
been fired.
Jonathan Cates received his
notification of termination from
Police Chief Karl E. Allen last
Tuesday night, exactly two
weeks after he was jailed by the
Georgia State Patrol.
According to the trooper who
investigated the case, Cates was
racing with a truck on East 11 th
Street on Aug. 31 when the
truck overturned and hit a tree.
A 15-year-old who was in the
pick-up was injured; however.

determine if the juvenile was the
driver. Both Cates, who was off
duty, and the juvenile left the
scene of the accident before
police arrived. He was charged
with a single misdemeanor
count of racing on highways or
streets.
Cates will have until this
morning (Wednesday) to appeal
his termination to City Admin
istrator Jerry Coalson and may
appeal to city council after that
if he is dissatisfied.
According to State Court of
ficials, Cates’ case is on Nov. 3
docket.
From the Blotter
To the point
The situation was heated for a Midville resident.
According to a report filed at the sheriff’s office, the man
noticed his AC wasn’t cooling his house and called an elec
tric company to check it out. He was taken aback by what
the technician found. Lodged into the side of the unit was a
field tip from an arrow.
A jumper
EMTs were summoned in Sardis after a passenger took a
tumble out of a moving vehicle. The victim was transported
to Burke Medical Center where deputies interviewed him to
make sure he hadn’t been assaulted.
The victim said he hadn’t been pushed but had jumped on
his own accord. When questioned further, he told officers
he was catching a ride with his friends - who first decided
to “get into (his) business” and then drove right past the
place he was going. That’s when the man decided to make
a break for it, despite the fact that he was seated in a mov
ing car.
Condiment crimes
Two alleged vandals may be in a big pickle.
Waynesboro police investigators are looking into a case
involving a car that was extensively damaged with mus
tard, eggs, spray paint and bleach. According to the report,
a couple heard noises outside a Short Street residence just
after midnight Thursday and saw two women, identified
as Yumekia Woods, 21, and Francheska Carter, 19, damag
ing their vehicle. When they were confronted, the woman
fled the scene. Officers reported extensive damage to the
vehicle, both inside and out. According to investigator Gene
Boseman, warrants have been issued for the arrest of both
women for criminal damage to property.

Drunk driver
indicted for
friend’s death
By Elizabeth Billips
lizbillips@yahoo.com
A Blythe man has been formally charged for his role in a
fatal crash that claimed the life of his passenger.
The grand jury indicted Travis Andrew Watton on five
charges stemming from the March 2009 accident, includ
ing a felony count of homicide by vehicle in the first de
gree.
At the time of the accident, state troopers who investi
gated the case said Burke County deputies arrived at the
scene on Farmers Bridge Road to find the body of Watton’s
friend, 21-year-old Donald Sikes.
Watton, who left before their arrival, returned with his
father and told officers he was driving home from a club in
Augusta when he swerved to miss a dog. His pick-up hit a
culvert and overturned.
Troopers said Watton had been ejected from the vehicle
and apparently left the scene to seek help. He would later
be hospitalized for his injuries.
In addition to vehicular homicide, Watton faces four mis
demeanor charges: DUI, driving with an excessive blood
alcohol concentration, driving with a suspended license and
failure to maintain lane.
The grand jury also indicted a Burke County man accused
of firing shots at a state ranger.
The jury returned “true bills” against David Paul Cadle
for seven crimes he allegedly committed on the night of
July 11, including aggravated assault and manufacturing
methamphetamine.
At the time of Cadle’s arrest, Cpl. Michael Crawley of the
Georgia Department of Natural Resources told reporters he
was staking out a Sardis property in response to complaints
of illegal artifact digging when Cadle shined a light on his
truck and fired three rounds.
Officers soon found Cadle living in a stolen motor home
where they also discovered components of a methamphet
amine lab.
Cadle is also charged with possession of a firearm during
the commission of a crime (two counts), theft by receiving
stolen property, unlawful dumping and littering.
All of the 26 other defendants on the grand jury’s Sep
tember docket were also indicted, including 19 accused of
property crimes. Of those, eight defendants are charged with
one or more counts of burglary. The defendants include:

intent to distribute;

with intent to distribute;
