Burke County mauls Westside
Devonta Osborne returns a punt for a touchdown in the
second quarter for his second score of the night.

Westside’s win on the coin toss
was the only upper hand they had
last Friday night in Burke
County.
It all went south from there for
the Patriots from Augusta.
Burke County High School’s
football team shut out Westside
72-0 for a record-breaking win.
The rout bested four team
records for Burke County, in
cluding most points scored in a
quarter, most points scored in a
half, most points scored in a
game and greatest margin of vic
tory in a game.
Head Coach Eric Parker said
his team didn’t set out to break
any scoring records but it wasn’t
a bad way to win a home opener.
“We weren’t going to get
caught up in scoring,” he said.
“We wanted to come out and
execute, play by play, and we did
that, but rest assured, we’ll find
something to fuss about. I think
our kids are just starting to play
at a different level and that’s
what we’re after.”
Coach Parker has talked of that
goal since his first season at
Burke County in 2007 and he
actively pursued it by compiling
some of the toughest schedules
in Class AAA.
“I’m starting to see some of
that championship fabric and this
isn’t one of those times when I’m
talking about down the road,” he
said. “I think we’re talking about
sooner than that.”
Westside couldn’t muster
much of a defense against the
Bears, who scored on every drive
but one and were up 59-0 by
halftime. The Bears totaled 11
touchdowns, including an inter
ception returned for a touchdown
and two punt returns to the end
zone. In on the scoring frenzy
were freshman Donquell Green
(3 TDs), senior Devin Beverly (2
TDs), senior 89 (1 TD), junior
Montres Kitchens (1 TD), senior
Devonta Osborne (2 TDs), fresh
man Branded Little (1 TD) and
freshman Reginald Grubbs (1
TD). Junior quarterback Corey
Mayton completed two touch
down passes. Green and Mayton
traded turns at quarterback
throughout the game before turn
ing it over to freshman Antonio
Harold in the fourth.
Though Burke County’s
youngsters played big roles
throughout the game, junior var
sity players completely took over
in the fourth quarter.
“It just feels good first to get
everyone on the field. I’m just
thrilled with that ninth and tenth
grade group,” Coach Parker said,
noting that 42 of the freshmen
in his program began a weight
lifting regimen with him while
still in middle school.
The damage might have been
worse had it not been for a run
ning clock during the entire sec
ond half.
Westside earned just 3 first
downs in the game and posted
66 yards total offense.
Even with the big win, the
Bears aren't taking anything for
granted as they begin region play
this Friday.
“These kids get after it every
day,” Coach Parker said. “The
bottom line is that we have to get
better.”
