Lady Spartans end season with wins,
prepare for state playoffs
The Edmund Burke Academy Lady Spartans (5-7,2-4) ended regular season play
last week with back-to-back wins against Thomas Jefferson Academy and First
Presbyterian Christian Academy. After losing at home to the Lady Jaguars earlier
in the season, Edmund Burke traveled to Louisville with payback on their minds.
They took the easy 8-3 victory. Katelynn Kent recorded the win for Edmund Burke.
The Lady Spartans crushed First Presbyterian 16-2 during their last regular game
of the season. Eighth grader Kayley Sapp made her first varsity appearance on the
mound and picked up her first win. Head coach Krystal Chance hopes the momen
tum will carry on to the state playoffs. “Our girls did what they needed to do before
the state tournament begins,” Chance said. “We won our last games, which I think
will give them the confidence they need going into the first round of the state
playoffs. Hopefully they can use the wins to their advantage and get through to the
second round.”The Lady Spartans will enter the state playoffs as the No. 3 seed
and face No. 2 seed Fullington Academy. The best of three series will begin this
Saturday in Pinehurst. The first game will start at 10 a.m. and the second and third
(if necessary) will immediately follow.

The Central Fellowship
Lancers trotted back to Macon
Friday night after suffering a
43-6 loss to Edmund Burke
Academy.
The Spartans (4-1, 1-0) en
tered their first region game of
the season as the favorite and
proved why from opening
kickoff.
After forcing the Lancers to
fumble on their first posses
sion. Edmund Burke capital
ized with a long pass to Alex
Sturkie. The pass set up the
Spartans’ first touchdown of
the night, courtesy of Michael
Taylor. Sturkie snuck in the
end zone to make good on a
two-point conversion, giving
the Spartans an early 8-0 lead.
The Lancers fumbled again
on their next possession just
before Spartan quarterback Lo
gan Christian connected with
Brandon Sharpe on a touch
down pass that went nearly
half the field.
Central Fellowship tried to
get on the board before the half
but Sturkie intercepted what
would have been a touchdown
pass. Sturkie would had three
interceptions during the game.
Just before the half. Sharpe
added to the Spartans’ lead
with a touchdown run to make
the score 21-0.
After the half, Central Fel
lowship had trouble moving
the ball down the field.
Dawson Atkinson and Sturkie
both picked off Lancer passes,
leading to a 31-yard touch
down run by Sharpe.
Early in the fourth quarter,
Sharpe picked up his fourth
touchdown of the night, giving
Edmund Burke a 37-0 lead.
With 7:41 left to play, Alan
Matthews rushed into the end
zone for his first touchdown of
the year. The Spartans were on
top 43-0. On their next posses
sion the Lancer quarterback
threw his fifth interception of
the game, this time into the
hands of Mason Winkler.
Central Fellowship managed
to find the end zone late in the
game but Edmund Burke’s
damage had been done, and the
Spartans picked up their first
region win of the season.
“I thought we played really
well,” head coach Buddy Sor
row said after the game. “They
had a really good team but they
just couldn’t pull it together as
a whole unit like we did. As a
team, we played much better
football.”
Although Spartan fans have
had much to celebrate so far
this season, a critical play dur
ing last Friday’s game took one
of their star players out for the
season. Michael Taylor blew
out his ACL and had to be
helped off the field. According
to coach Sorrow, the team will
have to push through the loss.
“We don’t have anybody to put
in there and do the things that
Michael did,” Sorrow said.
“But, this is a team game. We
need some players to step up
now and just give us every
thing they can. All we can do

us.
Taylor is expected to have
surgery and could be available
to play his senior year. Several
other injuries have plagued
Edmund Burke lately but don’t
appear to be as critical. Sharpe
will have very limited time on
defense due to a shoulder in
jury and Auston Riggs is re
turning from a shoulder injury
of his own. Matt Thompson
has also just come off of an
injury. All three players how
ever, are expected to take the
field this Friday night.
Edmund Burke will travel to
Savannah this Friday to take
on undefeated St. Andrews.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
