Blakeney celebrates Backpack Awareness Day
Complaining about getting too much homework almost seems like a rite of pas
sage for most kids in school. But complaining about back pain because their
backpacks are too heavy doesn’t have to be. Last Wednesday, Blakeney Elemen
tary School students celebrated National School Backpack Awareness Day with
help from the AOTA (American Occupational
Therapy Association) and occupational therapy
students from the Medical College of Georgia.
Students in Amy Sasser’s fourth grade class
learned safety tips to protect them from back pain
throughout life. MCG students Bob Phillips, Paten
Willis, Claire Wheless, Luke Henry, Megan Allen,
Megan Warren and Erin Vivian reviewed backpack
safety tips, such as buying a backpack that has
wide, padded shoulder straps and waste belt, and
how to properly pack, lift and carry their back
pack. They also encouraged students to wear
their backpack straps over both shoulders and
are discouraged from wearing backpacks that
weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of their body
weight. BES fourth graders, Emily Johnson, D.J.
Williams, Matthew Frey and Jaylon Glisson mod
eled the proper way to wear a backpack. At right,
Johnson gets some help with her backpack from
Phillips.
