I am Georgia 4-H!
Georgia 4-H Week is October 3-10, 2010
I, Cindy Cope, your county University of Georgia Cooperative Extension 4-H Program Assistant, am Georgia 4-H. And that’s what we’re celebrating this year during Georgia 4-H Week, which will
be held Oct. 3-10. We’re celebrating people all across the state who have had their lives bettered - and changed - through the 4-H program. 4-H is more than just a club. It’s students and adult
volunteers helping out in their communities and becoming better citizens in their towns and counties. 4-H’ers lend a hand, whether it’s through community service like holding Rabies Clinics for 40
years or making candy Christmas Trees for hospital patients. They gain mastery through projects and programs and learn more about Georgia and the wonders our state holds. Georgia 4-H gives
students the opportunity to find an interest, stimulate their learning with hands-on activities, gain public speaking skills and make friends who work to better their clubs, their communities, their
country and their world. In Burke County, some of our 4-H activities this year included Project Achievement, Forestry Teams, Shotgun Team, Dairy Show Team, Fair Mini-Exhibits, Georgia National
Fair Competitions, Cotton Boll/Consumer Judging, Camps, Rabies Clinics, Horse School, Poultry Judging, State Congress and many more! More than 475 active 4-H members from 5 th grade
through 12 th grade are enrolled in Burke County 4-H. We meet with 4-H members in schools and after in our other special clubs. In 2010, more than 200,000 students participated in Georgia 4-H
programs. Besides projects and competitions, members can go to camps and events all over the state and nation. Special UGA football and basketball days, camps at the beach, mountains and city
and even trips to Washington, D.C., offer exciting ways for our students to learn while having fun. Burke County 4-H’ers help the community, but they also need help from the community. They need
support through funding, volunteers and guidance in their project areas. If you’re not currently involved in 4-H, we’d love for you to join us. As Georgia celebrates 4-H Week, think about how you
can get involved, whether as a student, a volunteer or a parent.

What 4-H’ers and Alumni are saying:
Quotes from www. facebook. com/oaaes/l-am-Georqia-4-H
“I cannot imagine my life without 4-H.”- Phyllis
”1 am GEORGIA 4-H!”- Maikala
”1 started in 4-H in 1965 and have loved it ever since. ”- Paul
”l’m starting in a few days. :) Can’t wait.”- Kelley
I started at public speaking back in the 5 th grade,
doing a 4-H Demonstration in Forestry. I
would flip homemade posters and explain
how a tree turns into paper. I started at 4
minutes and graduated to 20 minutes by
the time I was in high school. Then as a
felony prosecutor, I was right at home, I
had been practicing for that moment since
the 5 th grade.
I learned the ability to stand up, believe in
what I say and say it, whether in front of a
jury or a camera here at Court TV. I use
those same skills I gained in 4-H. It isone
of the greatest gifts I’ve ever been given.
THANK YOU, GEORGIA 4-H!
-Nancy Grace, 4-H alumna,
Attorney, Court TV
“The decision to join the 4-H club changed by life. My 4-H project was
health because this fit my goal of becoming a
physician. The experiences I had through the
years of competitionprepared me for this ultimate
goal. But I did not know that along the way I would
develop skills in leadership and public speaking,
serve as a 4-H camp counselor at Rock Eagle 4-H
center, became a master 4-H’er, be awarded a
college scholarship, became a member of the
board of trustees of the GA 4-H Foundation and
eventually the Chairman of thefoundation. I never
thought any of this possible when I was a fright
ened 5 th grader at my first district competition. I did
not know what opportunities this club would
provide. I hope you will join Georgia 4-H. No dues. No uniform. 180,00
strong and growing. I am Frank Carter MD. I am GA 4-H.”
-Frank Carter, 4-H alumnus,
Master 4-H’er, Camp Counselor, Physician
As an active 4-Her for over ten years, I can truly say nothing in my life, with the excep
tion of my parents, has influenced my life as strongly as 4-H. I have
been given many opportunities and learned about many subjects
through 4-H, but more than anything I’ve learned to value people
and relationships, to appreciate every moment, and to take charge
of the direction I want my life to go. I’ve had many 4-H experiences,
but the camping program has been one of my favorites. At summer
camp children who have never had access to a swimming pool learn
to swim, and the toughest children cry Friday morning because they
don’t want to leave. I never want to see the day when we are not
able to offer opportunities like these to all of Georgia’s youth. I am
proud to call myself a Georgia 4-Her, and I hope that honor will be
available to our state’s youth for many years to come.
