Bears collect third
straight win

The Bears have momentum
on their side as they dig deeper
into their region schedule.
Burke County High School’s
football team (4-2,2-0) claimed
their third straight victory and
second region win Friday night
after pounding Hephzibah 49-
13.
It didn’t seem to hinder Burke
County that both varsity quar
terbacks were injured. Junior
Corey Mayton played with a
groin injury and freshman
Donquell Greene did not dress
out due to a minor concussion
suffered during practice earlier
in the week. Greene said he ex
pects to return next week if doc
tors give him the go-ahead.
Despite Mayton’s injury, he
completed 8 of 13 passes for
151 yards and 2 touchdowns,
according to unofficial press
box stats. He also led the team
in rushing with 106 yards and 1
touchdown on 8 carries.
All-around athlete Devonte
Osborne also took the helm of
the offense several times for the
first time this season. The senior,
who has already proved himself
in a number of other positions,
carried the ball 3 times to gain
36 yards and 2 touchdowns.
“He can pretty much do it all,”
Bears Head Coach Eric Parker
said of Osborne. “I hate that he’s
a senior.”
Coach Parker also praised the
offensive line for making a
strong running game possible
Friday night.
Despite a shaky first posses
sion, the Bears were on the
board with 4:16 left in the first
quarter after senior running
back Devin Beverly motored
into the end zone. Bobby Jones’
kick was good for the point af
ter.
Four plays and a punt later the
Bears had the ball back. Follow
ing a 57-yard, 5-play drive that
lasted just more than a minute,
Burke County scored again
when senior Bob Osborne
wrapped his arms around a 24-
yard pass from Mayton to the
comer of the end zone. Again,
Jones produced on the PAT kick.
Bob Osborne totaled 80 yards
receiving on 3 catches in the
game.
Only five seconds passed be
fore Burke County was back on
the offensive. Junior Derwin
Butler recovered a fumbled pass
on the Rebels’ first play of the
drive near the 30-yard line.
Devonte Osborne took over at
quarterback and kept the ball on
Burke County’s first play for a
scamper to the end zone. Jones’
kick was blocked, but the Bears
were already up 20-0 with 4 sec
onds left in the first quarter.
Just as the second quarter be
gan ticking off, Burke County
junior Kadarius Burdette made
an interception and ran the ball
all the way back to Hephzibah’s
10-yard line.
Three plays later, Mayton
kept the ball to score and then
made good on the two-point
conversion with a hand-off to
Beverly.
The Rebels made it on the
board on their next possession
but didn’t get to celebrate long.
A 10-play, 82-yard drive cul
minated with a touchdown for
the Bears when Devonte
Osborne shoved his way into the
end zone with 3:19 left in the
half. Freshman Untorrey Tho
mas kicked the point after to put
Corey Mayton rushed for more than 100 yards and passed for
more than 150 Friday night.
Burke County up 35-7.
Before the half was over, the
Bears scored once more when
Mayton connected with senior
tight end Tavarius Washington
on a 20-yard touchdown pass.
Thomas sent another kick
through the posts to end the half
42-7.
On Burke County’s first pos
session in the second half, a 10-
play drive from Hephzibah’s 18-
yard line, Beverely finished off
the Bears’ scoring frenzy with a
30-yard run to the end zone for
his second touchdown of the
night. Thomas made good on
the kick. Beverly totaled 71
yards rushing for the night.
The fourth quarter marked the
Bears third straight game to start
a running clock in the final 12
minutes. With Burke County’s
junior varsity on the field,
Hephzibah squeezed in one
more touchdown on their last
possession, ending the game
with a 49-13 win for the Bears.
The Bears were led in tack
ling by Washington, Bertron
Jordan, Devonte Osborne and
Butler.
“Defensively, I give a lot of
credit to the guys for playing a
good game against a passing
team,” Coach Parker said.
“We’re getting better at (tack
ling), but we obviously don’t
think we’re where we need to
be.”
