Center for New Beginnings celebrates new location
By Anne Marie Kyzer

A unique center that serves
special needs children from
Burke and surrounding rural
counties has found a place of its
own.
The Center for New Begin
nings, the brainchild of local resi
dent and special education
teacher Sarah Ashe, moved out
of its corner at First Baptist
Church and into its own build
ing on West Sixth Street.
“We couldn’t possibly have
grown to such a place without
the help of First Baptist Church
over the past five years,” Ashe
said, noting that operations are
funded by donations from fami
lies.
The center has continuously
grown since its inception five
years ago and now serves ap
proximately 90 children, ranging
in age from newborn to 21, with
various needs. Though initially
Ashe’s efforts focused on chil
dren with autism, she and her
team are helping a number of
children with Down syndrome,
physical disabilities and other
challenges.
Ashe developed the center as
a way to offer children in rural
areas all the special services they
might need in one place instead
of requiring their families to
travel to various service provid
ers in Augusta or beyond.
The new space, which under
went a makeover for its new pur-
pose, includes about 4,500
square feet available for educa
tional, behavioral and counsel
ing services as well as occupa
tional and speech therapy.
“I see it as a lot of great ser
vices coming together under one
roof,” Ashe said.
Sarah Ashe, center, along with counselors, therapists, clients and supporters, cut the ribbon last week on the new home for
the Center for New Beginnings and CSRA Therapy.
Center’s move leads to expansion of therapy services
Though CSRA Therapy,
which is based in Hephzibah,
sent therapists to the Center
for New Beginnings’ previ
ous location to assist chil
dren, the move has allowed
them to locate another office
in Waynesboro.
CSRA Therapy occupies
roughly half of the space in
the center’s new location and
offers occupational and
speech therapy to children
served there.
Owner Rachelle Clark said
expanding to a permanent
Waynesboro home will en
able her therapists to engage
in a host of additional activi
ties with the children, thanks
to plenty of space to spread
out.
“We had a lot of equipment
we weren’t able to use be
cause we didn’t have enough
space before,” she said, noting cation as well. “We will be able have a waiting list down here
that additional therapists will to serve more children now and so, hopefully, we will be able
be added to the Waynesboro lo- really market our services. We to clear it out.”
Wade Strite takes a plunge in the new ball pit in the CSRA Therapy portion of the building.
