Edmund Burke cruised past
Robert Toombs last weekend, tak
ing their second region win of the
season.
The Spartans had five different
players score touchdowns in their
47-20 victory against the Crusad
ers.
Edmund Burke started the game
with a short opening kick-off,
which was fumbled by a Crusader
and recovered by the Spartans.
This set up a 30-yard touchdown
pass from Spartan quarterback
Logan Christian to Brandon
Sharpe, giving Edmund Burke an
early lead. The Crusaders re
sponded minutes later with a
touchdown, tying the game at
seven. With 2:07 left in the first
quarter, Dawson Atkinson spoiled
an impressive offensive drive by
the Crusaders with an interception
and return to midfield. With un
der 1:00 left to go, Sharpe scored
his second touchdown of the game
with a 35 yard run up the middle.
At the end of the first quarter,
Edmund Burke led 14-7.
Early in the second quarter, the
Crusaders snuck into the end zone
and tied the game 14-14. Hagen
Wade had a big kickoff return for
the Spartans, setting up a 34-yard
touchdown pass from Christian to
senior Jake Evans. After the Spar
tan defense held strong and Rob
ert Toombs committed two big
penalties, Christian found his way
in the end zone with a 9-yard rush.
The Spartans led 28-14.
Edmund Burke added insult to
injury just before the half when
Clint Saxon recovered a Crusader
fumble with just 40 seconds left
on the clock. Sharpe would later
find the end zone for his third
touchdown of the night.
After halftime, Robert Toombs
threatened to cut Edmund Burke’s
lead but fumbled in the end zone.
Atkinson once again came up big
for the Spartans by recovering the
turnover. Neither team scored in
the third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter
Hagen Wade scored a touchdown
with a 26-yard ran. After Chris
tian intercepted a Crusader pass
near midfield, he threw a 44-yard
touchdown pass to Alex Sturkie.
Late in the fourth, Robert Toombs
was able to sneak a pass in the end
zone, but Edmund Burke took the
47-20 win. After the game head
coach Buddy Sorrow commented
on the win.
“We played real well offen
sively,” Sorrow said. “We threw
the ball, ran the ball and blocked
like we were supposed to. On the
defensive side, we had some
trouble stopping their fullback but
showed some improvement later
in the game.”
The Spartans will travel to Au
gusta this Friday for a region
match-up against Westminster.
Although Edmund Burke is the
heavy favorite, coach Sorrow
showed some concerns about
Westminster’s passing game.
“They throw the ball on almost
every possession,” Sorrow said.
“When a team throws the ball that
much, good and bad things can
happen. We’ve got to continue to
get better and learn to stop the
pass.”
