Sardis police arrested a burglar
sleeping at a crime scene.
According to Sardis Police
Chief John Finley, officers had
been looking for Gary Lassiter,
20, for two burglaries that took
place in June and September.
In one of those cases, a woman
came home from a church func
tion to find Lassiter inside her
home.
“He had taken a shower and
was cooking her groceries,”
Chief Finley said.
Officers got their opportunity
around 2 a.m. Sunday when an
other resident discovered his
home broken into and Lassiter
asleep inside.
When Lassiter awoke, he
locked himself in the bathroom
then crawled out the window.
Chief Finley said. Several neigh
bors spotted Lassiter and held
him for police. He was charged
with three
counts of bur
glary, ob
structing or
hindering a
law enforce
ment officer
and probation
violation.

You’ve Got Mail
A Burke County jailer was passing out mail when he got a sur
prise.
According to a report fded at the sheriff’s office, the officer was
handing out mail to inmates on the A-Block of the jail when he
found what looked like marijuana glued in the bottom of the
envelope’s fold. Deputies seized the envelope and are still trying
to determine who the sender was.
Survey this
An elderly Burke County man wouldn’t take any foolishness
from an unidentified offender who pretended to be collecting sur
vey information.
According to a report filed at the sheriff’s office, a young man
wealing a dress shirt and tie knocked on the 91-year-old’s door
last Friday night and asked him to fill out a survey. When the
victim questioned him, the young man pushed him into the house.
The elderly man told deputies he pushed the boy back and told
him to wait there because he had something for him. When the
victim returned with a gun, the offender was already running down
the road.
Gotta get a Kia
It was a sad ending for a stolen Kia.
Last Friday morning, a Clark Place Road resident woke to find
shattered glass where her vehicle had been parked. Along with
her Kia, the thief got away with a checkbook, cell phone and
more than $400 cash that had been left inside. Several hours later,
deputies found what they believe was her Kia Sorento ... but it
wasn’t a happy story. A small SUV had been parked on the rail
road tracks on Sam Mead Road and burned extensively, along
with 11 cross ties.
Nicotine fix
Criminals were looking for a late night fix.
According to a report filed at the Waynesboro Police Depart
ment, an officer patrolling West Sixth Street last Friday noticed
the glass door had been shattered at Burke Haven Comer Store.
The burglars had already left the scene but a review of the store’s
video footage showed three males hurled a brick through the glass
door at 1:53 a.m. They stole $400 worth of Newport cigarettes
before fleeing.
Augusta Tech hosts criminal justice symposium
By Anne Marie Kyzer
annemariek@thetruecitizen.com
Crime was the main subject be
ing studied at Augusta Technical
College’s Waynesboro/Burke
Campus Tuesday.
The school hosted its first Crimi
nal Justice Symposium to address
crimes, causes and the justice that
is handed down.
Patrick Finney, criminal justice
instructor at the ATC campus in
Waynesboro, said he hopes the
symposium will become an annual
event.
“We’re bringing together local,
state and federal law enforcement
along with clergy, judges and the
public,” he said, adding that he
hopes it will foster a better under
standing of how problems are be
ing addressed. “At this point, there
are a lot of disciplines that don’t
understand each other.”
Finney said those contacted, in
cluding Commissioner Garland
Hunt of the Department of Juve
nile Justice, were eager to become
involved. He and ATC criminal
justice department chair Sean
Joiner hope the event can be also
be hosted in Augusta and
Thomson in years to come.
ATC Vice President of Opera
tions for the Waynesboro/Burke
Campus Ella Jones said opening
up discussion was a good place to
start when addressing crime prob
lems.
‘ The dialogue today, to put it all
on the table, is what we need to
do,” she said. “If we all continue
to work at something, we are
bound to see change.”
