Consulting firm selected to
help with judicial center

A firm has been selected to help
the county develop a plan for bet
ter meeting the needs of the court
system.
Burke County Commissioners
voted unanimously to sign a
$14,650 contract with Carter
Watkins Associates for their ser
vices in researching the county’s
needs for more court space and
the best way to meet them. The
firm has previously helped plan
courthouses in Putnam, Jasper
and Walton counties.
The firm is already handling
two other local projects, includ
ing the county’s scale house and
renovation of the county-owned
building leased to Ogeechee Be
havioral Health Services.
Prior to choosing Carter
Watkins, commissioners had nar
rowed down a list of possible
firms to three finalists, which
were interviewed earlier over the
summer.
Now that a firm has been se
lected, commissioners are look
ing to them to help determine the
best option for providing ad
equate and secure courtroom fa
cilities. County Commission
Chairman Wayne Crockett said
he wants the firm to give priority
consideration to the possibility of
modifying the existing court
house or building an annex to it,
as opposed to constructing an
entirely new facility elsewhere.
An advisory committee of lo
cal residents, elected officials and
court officers has also been se
lected to aid in planning and has
met once to discuss their role.
Another meeting of the group has
not yet been scheduled.
