Bears pound Patriots
By Anne Marie Kyzer

The Bears unleashed a scor
ing frenzy at Westside High last
weekend.
Burke County High School’s
football team shut out the Patri
ots 63-0 in their final match be
fore sub-region play begins.
“It was obviously a pretty
good night,’’ Bears Head Coach
Eric Parker said. “The first se
ries on offense and defense was
a little flat, coming off of an
emotional ballgame the week
before. But we shook it off
pretty quick and went on to
dominate the game like we
needed to.”
By halftime, with the Bears
already leading 49-0, starting
quarterback Corey Mayton and
a slew of other starters were al
ready watching from the side
lines while youngsters on the
team picked up some playing
time.
“We went ahead and put the
game out of reach and gave the
youngsters a chance to play,”
Coach Parker said. “That’s al
ways good when they get a
chance to play on Friday nights
and be a part of what we’re do
ing and the enthusiasm. It pays
off big dividends.”
Even though he retired early
in the night, Mayton picked up
95 yards in the air, completing
4 of 6 passes. He rushed for 75
yards on just 4 carries. Mayton
and sophomore quarterback
Donquell Green were in on the
Bears’ first 6 touchdowns.
Mayton ran 2 of those into the
end zone and passed the ball
once to Jaques Houston, who
recorded a 65-yard touchdown
reception on the play. Mayton
then ran in the conversion for 2
more points. Green carried the
ball across the goal line for two
touchdowns and then completed
a 37-yard touchdown pass to
Antwan Walker. Montres Kitch
ens ran 34 yards to score just
before halftime and led the
Bears in rushing with 83 yards.
Sophomore Reginald Grubbs
scored the third with an 8-yard
run, and sophomore Antonio
Harold ran in the final touch
down from 22 yards out in the
fourth quarter. Freshman
Quintae Brown also rushed for
63 yards on one carry.
Kicker Untorrey Thomas was
4 for 5 on the night, before
sophomore Ian Phillips was
brought in and sent the final
three PATs between the
goalposts.
Burke County recorded 391
yards on the ground and 132
yards passing the game.
The Bears’ defense didn’t al
low the Patriots to muster more
than 9 yards total offense.
Andre Parrish, Devonte Lam
bert and Derwin Butler led the
attack. Parrish had 2 unassisted
sacks, 7 assisted sacks and 6
total tackles otherwise. Tom
Ellison, Christopher Washing
ton and Kitchens also posted big
hits on defense.
Still, Coach Parker said

Burke County heads to Glenn Hills
By Anne Marie Kyzer
annemariek@thetruecitizen.com
The Bears will head to Glenn
Hills this weekend when the
wins begin to mean even more.
Burke County High School’s
football team (3 -1) will travel to
Augusta Friday night to take on
the Spartans for their first sub-
region contest of the season.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
From here on out, it’s all
about making the state playoffs
and securing a good spot on the
bracket.
The Spartans will be looking
for their first win when they
welcome Burke County, but
head coach Eric Parker is hop
ing they don’t find it.
“Every ball game now has
playoff implications, along with
home field advantage implica
tions they’re so important.”
Glenn Hills dropped their first
four games to Lakeside, Evans,
Westside and Josey.
Josey defeated them last Fri
day 35-6.
Coach Parker said the Spar
tans are coping with inexperi
ence this year with a very young
team but are very athletic as al
ways, noting especially one
fleet footed running back.
He said most importantly,
though, the Bears need to con
tinue to improve and play well
if they are going to be where
they need to be come playoff
time.
“Whoever we play, we just
need to keep getting better and
play our level of football. That’s
the way we approach practice
and workouts.”
Coach Parker and his Bears
will look for fans to travel with
them again this weekend as they
continue their four-game stretch
of away games.
Burke County fans easily out
numbered Westside fans 4-to-l
in Augusta last week and Coach
Parker said that kind of support
speaks volumes to the players.
“Our fans really come out and
get on the road, and that gives
us an advantage,” he said.
“Those are not just fans
either.. .those are friends, family
members, people from the kids’
churches and other community
supporters. I think that’s a big
deal.”
