In EBA cross country
Wilson yet to be beaten
By Tres Bragg
tresbragg@bellsouth.net
He’s three for three and show
ing no signs of slowing down.
Spartan runner Clay Wilson
has captured first place finishes
in the first three cross country
races of the season. And, his
times are only getting faster.
During his first race over
three weeks ago, Wilson crossed
the finish line ahead of every
one in the field, recording a
time of 19:05. A week later, he
outran his competitors once
again, improving his time by
four seconds. In Wilson’s latest
performance, he posted his best
time of the season (18:39) to
win his third consecutive race.
With the region meet approach
ing, Wilson seems to be the man
to beat.
Clay won the region title last
year, while his older brother
Kyle took the title the two years
prior. If Clay can repeat last
year’s finish, it will be the
fourth straight year that an EBA
runner has won the region
championship. Defending his
title would also earn Wilson a
berth in the state meet, where
he finished third last season.
This year’s region race is sched
uled for October 24 at Magno
lia Springs.
In junior varsity cross coun
try action, eighth grader Hunter
Odom has won all three races
this season. Like Wilson,
Odom’s time has improved each
race. Odom is expected to post
solid finishes as a varsity run
ner next year.
Clay Wilson receives his first
place medal after the race. Wil
son is undefeated in cross
country action this season.
Lady Bears prepare
for region playoffs
By Anne Marie Kyzer

The Lady Bears will play to
keep their season alive this
weekend.
Burke County High School’s
softball team (9-10) will travel
to Harlem High Saturday for
the first round of the Region 3-
AAA playoffs. Burke County
head coach Larry Keller said the
best of three series will require
the Lady Bears to play to their
potential against Harlem, which
is currently the No. 7 team in
the state.
Burke County’s girls played
their final regular season game
yesterday afternoon (Tuesday)
but results were not available at
press time.
Last week, Burke County suf
fered losses to Washington
County and Grovetown.
WACO’s Lady Hawks handed
the Lady Bears an 18-10 defeat.
The Burke County girls also
suffered a 10-4 loss to
Grovetown.
The team celebrated senior
night last Tuesday, honoring
team captain Sequioa Dixon in
her last home game. Dixon, the
starting right fielder, hit .380
this year and turned in solid
performances all season in right
field.
“Sequioa grew into the team
leader this year,’’ Head Coach
Larry Keller said. “She was our
only senior and her leadership
put four more wins on the board
than last year. Any time you can
increase your wins by forty per
cent, you have to look at the
leadership and how hard the
girls worked this year.”

Heidi Lee recorded 1 ace and 1

Cubs undefeated on football field
From Staff Reports
Burke County Middle
School’s football team has
started the season off right.
The Cubs have won their first
three games, defeating
Effingham County 18-6,
Ebenezer 34-0 and Screven Co.
28-6.
Today (Wednesday), they take
on another undefeated team,
William James Middle, in
Statesboro at Stockyard Lield at
5 p.m. The winner of this game
will likely claim the No. 1 seed
in the playoffs.
“It should be an exciting con
test between two good teams.
We are just worried about do
ing the fundamentals right,”
Cubs head coach Billy
Marchman said. "We have a tal
ented group of eighth graders
that are big, strong and fast.
They put in their time in the off
season and the prep work is pay
ing off so far.”
Quarterback Jawone Bennett
leads the offense with the most
yards rushing and touchdowns,
and running back Boisey Lewis
is not far behind in totals.
“We’ve had a balanced attack
on offense that has created
problems for our opponents
during the first three weeks of
play,” Marchman said, adding
that the defensive line Justin
Golphin, Keion Clinton,
Ja’Nathian Parrish, Marcus
Smith, Andrew Jordan have
dominated the line of scrimmage
which allows our offense to stay
on the field more.
Lans can watch them at home
next Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the
Bear Den 5 p.m. as they host
Richmond Hill.
