Classmates gathered for a banquet and dance the final night of the reunion weekend in Savannah.
WHS, SGA reunite for
40 th class reunion
From Staff Reports
In May of 1971, a unique
group of prospective graduates
from Waynesboro High School
and Sardis-Girard-Alexander
High School donned their caps
and gowns so that they might
participate in the long-awaited
graduation exercises.
Uniquely characteristic of
these graduates was their trans
fer, one year earlier, from R. E.
Blakeney High School, where
they had spent the first three
years of their high school career,
to Waynesboro High and SGA,
respectively, where they had at
tended only one year.
Four decades later, last
month, a number of these gradu
ates reunited for a weekend at
the Hilton Savannah Desoto
Hotel in historic Savannah to
commemorate the 40 th anniver
sary of their high school gradu
ation. Reunion attendees ap
plauded each other upon arrival,
seeing some of their classmates
for the first time in 20, 30 or 40
years. They perused their 1971
yearbooks, reminisced, shared
life experiences, laughed and
even shed a few tears.
The highlight of the weekend
was the Saturday evening ban
quet program and dance. After
dinner, a Proclamation from Dr.
Otis Johnson, Mayor of Savan
nah was read. Perhaps, the most
memorable part of the program
was the "Reflections” section
during which classmates contin
ued to re-introduce themselves
beyond the boundaries of their
tables and to share heartfelt sto
ries.
Sadly, some 15 classmates
have passed away and were not
physically present for the spe
cial occasion. Yet, despite their
absence, they were not forgot
ten as each was memorialized
with a burning candle.
One classmate, a Lieutenant
Colonel in the U. S. Army,
shared an account of the daily
challenges she faces as an ac
tive duty nurse, currently sta
tioned in Germany. Hearing her
reflection reminded attendees to
deepen their appreciation for the
sacrifices all service men and
women and their families make
on behalf of this country.
Later, in reunion style, class
mates danced the night away
with some of them taking home
prizes for correctly naming the
artist and titles of some Old
School tunes.
The following morning, sev
eral classmates worshipped at
Davis Ark Baptist Church,
where Rev. Herman Woods,
husband of a 1971 alumnae, is
pastor.

1971 graduate Juanita Wash
ington.)
