Bob Hammond

Robert “Bob” Leonard
Hammond Sr., 57, of West
Palm Beach, Fla., passed away
Sept. 20,
2011 at 10
p.m.
He was
born to the
late James
Thomas
Hammond
Sr. and
(Lillie) Mae Hammond at Good
Samaritan Hospital on Dec. 23,
1953, in West Palm Beach.
Robert graduated from Palm
Beach High School and also at
tended Palm Beach Junior Col
lege and received an AP in busi
ness.
He was an Entomologist at
the Southeast Georgia Experi
ment Station at Midville, Ga.
He was a teacher of the men
tally challenged, correction of
ficer, horticultural specialist and
lecturer in the South Central
Georgia area, and Curator of the
Burke County Museum.
He was president of the Burke
County Historical Society,
founder and vice- president of
the Burke County Genealogical
Society and also author and
compiler of Family History.
Robert was awarded the Judah
P. Benjamin Certificate from the
Daughters of the Confederacy
for preserving the history of
Burke County as a speaker,
writer, curator, researcher and
a community leader.
A lover of the outdoors,
plants, trees and flowers,
Robert’s passion was growing
different things.
He was an active member of
First Baptist Church of Midville,
where he sang in the choir and
sometimes led worship. He
loved to play the guitar. He was
lead singer of a gospel trio called
the Sowers from 1974 to 1978.
Robert is survived by three
children, Robert L. Hammond
Jr. of West Palm Beach, Amber
Hammond Weeks of
Waynesboro, Ga., and a step
son, Chris D. Robinson of
Bartow, Ga.; three grandchil
dren, Robert L. Hammond III,
Ryan Hammond and Nathan
Weeks; and four siblings, James
Hammond, Tommy Hammond,
Ed Hammond and Beverly
Powell.
We all will miss you, but you
will never be forgotten.

Ann A. Franklin
Ann A. Franklin, 84, of
Waynesboro, Ga., wife of the
late Ben Franklin, of Spring
Valley Rd, entered into rest
Thursday, Sept. 22, at Univer
sity Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
Memorial services were held
Tuesday, Sept. 27, at noon,
from the St. Michael’s Episco
pal Church Memorial Gardens,
with the Rev. Jim Shumard of
ficiating.
Mrs. Franklin, daughter of the
late Bryan George and Alice
McKinney Anderson, was born
in Orlando, Fla. She was a
member of St. Michael’s Epis
copal Church and was an avid
bridge player and reader.
She was preceded in death by
her daughter, Alice Sherman.
She is survived by her son and
daughter-in-law, William G.
and Loreen Sherman, of Las
Vegas, Nev.; her grandchildren,
Shelly Sharpe, Ashley Miller,
Allison McMillan, Bryan R.
Sherman and Zack Anderson;
her eight great grandchildren;
and her brother and sister-in-
law, Robert G. and Judy Ander
son, of Eustus, Fla.

Jack ‘Pee Wee’ Chester
Mr. Jack “ Pee Wee” Chester,
age 72, of Statesboro, Ga., died
Saturday Sept. 24, 2011.
The Bulloch County native
was a 1958 graduate of Marvin
Pittman Laboratory School in
Statesboro. Jack was employed
with Rockwell Company which
later became Brooks Instrument
for 39 years, retiring as Sales
Manager. He served for eight
years in the U.S. National
Guard.
He was preceded in death by
his parents, Doyce and Eunice
Dickerson Chester; a brother,
Wade Chester; a sister, Carolyn
Lucas, and a brother-in-law,
Donnie Pope.
Surviving are his wife of 22
years, Martha Joyner Chester of
Statesboro; a daughter, Donna
Alamillo of Hilton Head Island,
S.C.; two sons and daughters-
in-law, Allan and Karyn Chester
of St. Mary’s, Ga., and Lance
and Kim Chester of Winston,
Ga.; a step daughter and her hus
band, Michelle and Bubby Finch
of Statesboro; a step son and his
wife, Bert and Vanessa Pierce
of Millen, Ga.; two sisters and
a brother-in-law, Evelyn Pope
and Joyce and Roy Kennedy all
of Statesboro; a brother-in-law,
Carl Lucas of Statesboro and a
sister-in-law, Yvonne Chester of
Twin City, Ga. and 17 grand
children.
Visitation was Monday, Sept.
26, at Joiner-Anderson Funeral
Home in Statesboro from 5 un
til 8 p.m.
Funeral services were con
ducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday
Sept. IT- in the chapel of Joiner-
Anderson Funeral Home.
Interment was in the Bulloch
Memorial Gardens

Mrs. Meredith Ward Chandler

Mrs. Meredith Ward Chandler,
77, of Sardis, Ga., a loving wife,
mother and grandmother passed
away Friday, Sept. 23, 2011 at
the Medical College of Georgia
in Augusta, Ga.
Funeral Services were at 11
a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at the
Sardis United Methodist Church
with the Rev. Steve Sirmons
officiating.
Burial was in the Sardis Bap
tist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Chandler was a native
and lifelong resident of Burke
County. She graduated as Vale
dictorian from Girard High
School in 1952. She was em
ployed with AT&T for several
years as a telephone operator
before becoming a teacher’s
aide for Cousins Elementary
and retired after 24 years as Li
brarian from the Sardis Public
Library.
Mrs. Chandler was a very de
voted member of the Sardis
United Methodist Church, the
Naomi Haeseler Circle and the
Sardis Baptist WMU Night
Circle. She was a past member
of the Town and Country
Women’s Club and the Invest
ment Club in Waynesboro. In
addition to her church, Mrs.
Chandler loved traveling, so
cializing with her friends, shop
ping and spending time with her
family.
She was preceded in death by
her parents, Fulcher and
Ernestine Ward, her brother,
Melvin Ward, and her sisters,
Alice Kathryn Griffin and
Margie Murray.
Surviving are her husband of
56 years, Ray Chandler of
Sardis; her sons, Mike Chandler
and wife Jan and Randy Chan
dler and wife Patricia, both of
Sardis; her daughter, Kathy
Graham and husband Nelms of
Waynesboro, Ga.; her sister-in-
law, Mrs. Ruth Ward of Sardis;
her grandchildren. Josh Chan
dler and wife Kelli, Megan
Chandler, Jessi Chandler, Jacob
Chandler, Haley Chandler, all of
Sardis, Emily Graham of
Waynesboro; and her great
grandchild Luke Chandler of
Sardis.
Visitation was Sunday, Sept.
25, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Joiner-
Anderson-Saxon-Prescott Fu
neral Home.

93, of Midville, Ga., on Friday,
Sept.23, 2011 at the WaCo Re
gional Medical Center Extended
Care Facility in Sandersville,
Ga.
Funeral services were Tues
day, Sept. 27, at 11 a.m. in the
Midville United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Tony
Smith and the Rev. Charles
Cravey officiating.
Interment was in the Midville
City Cemetery.
The family received friends
Tuesday at the Midville United
Methodist Church following the
interment.

Johnson and Cale Womack
Honorary pallbearers were

Mrs. Womack was born Oct.
11, 1917, in rural Emanuel
County to Joseph L. and Mamie
Kitchens Black and retired from
Samson Manufacturing Co of
Waynesboro, Ga. She was raised
in Union Grove Methodist
Church and became a member
of the Midville United Method
ist Church in 1948.
Mrs. Womack was preceded
in death by her husband, Roy
A. Womack; a sister; Lucille
Moore; brothers; Tom Black,
Henry Black, Joe Black, Alton
Black and Virgil Black; a sis
ter-in-law, Bridie Black; and
brothers-in-law, Aubry
Womack and Robbie Womack.
Survivors include two daugh
ters, Donna W. (Michael) Will
iams of Macon, Ga., and Brenda
S. Durden of Memphis, Tenn.;
two sons, Ray H. (Martha)
Womack of Midville and Lacy
W. (Roma) Womack of Oakton,
Va.; a sister, Sarah B. Johnson
of Herndon, Ga.; two sisters-in-
law, Betty Black of Birdsville,
Ga., and Blonnie Johnson of
Midville; a brother- in- law, C.
L. Womack of Swainsboro,
Ga.; a loving caregiver. Earline
Johnson of Sandersville, Ga.;
seven grandchildren: Jonathan
(Luann) Womack, Scotty
Womack, Kerry (Nabil) Lajdel,
Kevin Womack, Jessica (Kent)
Ames, Elizabeth Durden and
Sarah Durden; nine great-grand
children; three step great-grand
children; and numerous nieces
and nephews.

Ms. O’Neal, a lifelong resi

1986 graduate of Lincoln
County High School and mem
ber of Hephzibah Baptist
Church.

both of Lincolnton; parents,
Perry and Gail Jones O’Neal of
Lincolnton and Ronnie North of
Waynesboro, Ga.; half brothers,
Mike O’Neal of Lincolnton and

mother, Mrs. Ellie Jones of
