A Waynesboro police officer
was hospitalized after being
punched during a domestic
quarrel.
According to investigators,
Lt. Rusty Salemi was injured
Thursday morning after he was
dispatched to a Stone Avenue
home where a woman was be
ing beaten by her boyfriend.
“She had a small baby in her
arms,” investigator
Gene Boseman said,
noting the victim, who
had given birth just
two weeks prior, had
been struck several
times on the back of
her head and neck.
After Lt. Salemi
separated the couple
Brandon Jones
the jaw area.
“(Salemi) didn’t
know anything was
wrong with him at the
time ... he continued to
handle the situation
and made the arrest,”
Investigator Boseman
said, explaining the
veteran officer had ac-
and turned to handcuff the boy- tually suffered a severe concus-
friend, 19-year-old Brandon sion. "But the next day he be-
Jones, he was punched once in came nauseous and went to the
hospital.”
He remained hospitalized
three days, but has been re
leased and continues to recover.
Jones was arrested for aggra
vated assault on a law enforce
ment officer and felony obstruc
tion. For the attack on his girl
friend he is additionally charged
under the Family Violence Act
with battery and cruelty to chil
dren in the third degree.

Police launch explorer program
By Elizabeth Billips

Local teenagers will have a
chance to rub elbows and shoot
guns with some of Burke
County’s finest.
The Waynesboro Police De
partment is launching leader
ship programs at Burke County
High School and Edmund
Burke Academy that are aimed
at piquing interest in law en
forcement and the military.
The afterschool program,
which is expected to begin in
mid-October, will bring to
gether officers and students for
everything from ride-alongs and
target practice to actual court
hearings.
They’ll also hold mock trials
and compete with explorer stu
dents from other counties in ar
eas like arrest procedure and
public speaking.
“Students don’t have to want
a career in law enforcement to
be part of this... all they need is
an interest,” program coordina
tor Major Mary Bennett, adding
that participating officers are
being sought from all local
agencies. “The program is really
about learning life skills and
how to be a leader.”
While Major Bennett hopes to
one day expand the program to
include younger students, it is
currently reserved for those 14-
18 years old with a GPA of 2.5
or higher. Students may sign up
at their school’s guidance office.

Community members are
needed for chaperoning and
to assist with training. No ex
perience in law enforcement
is required. To learn more,

A Perkins man was charged with aggravated assault after a
drunken card game turned ugly. According to a report filed at
the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, Kenneth Lacy Brown, 21,
was playing a few hands at a Lloyds Lane home when he got
angry and began fighting with a woman there. During the tussle,
he allegedly picked up a chair and hit her in the face with it.
Brown fled the scene, but officers took the "heavily intoxi
cated” victim to the hospital where she was treated for facial
fractures. The victim, according to previous reports, was ar
rested at the same house back in June after she allegedly beat
one man with a brush and crutch and fought with another after
he found her in the shower with his wife and tried to join them.
She said, she said
Police had trouble getting to the bottom of a fight at
Briarwood Apartments.
Around 3 a.m. Saturday, a pregnant 23-year-old claimed
she was walking outside when she was attacked by group of
women. She told officers she had been punched and kicked
and showed them a knot rising on her forehead.
But the woman she claimed was the main aggressor had a
very different story. She admitted striking the victim but said
she only did so after the woman walked by and squirted her
with pepper spray for no apparent reason.
Pack mentality
An East Seventh Street woman thought someone was break
ing into her trailer. But it wasn’t a somebody. According to a
report filed at the Waynesboro Police Department, officers
arrived just in time to spot a pack of pit bulls trying to dig
under the home and damaging the underpinning in the pro
cess. An animal control officer was called in to deal with the
offenders.
