Bears rout Spartans to start region

For the second straight week,
the Bears put away a win that
seemed way too easy.
Burke County High School’s
football team (4-1) defeated
Glenn Hills 62-6 last Friday
night, giving the Bears a win to
kick off their Region 3-AAA
South schedule.
“We got out there and did
what we needed to do,” Bears
Head Coach Eric Parker said.
“It’s always big to get that first
region win. Every win we get
now is huge for getting in the
playoffs and gaining home field
advantage.”
The Bears didn’t take long to
put the game out of reach, with
43 points on the board just 2
seconds into the second quarter.
Shortly after. Coach Parker
was already sending in the un
derclassmen and giving his jun
ior varsity squad some experi
ence under the lights.
Orlando “Dre” Howard struck
first for the Bears, scoring on a
26-yard carry just a minute and
a half into the game. Quarter
back Corey Mayton, running
back Montres Kitchens and
sophomore running back
Reginald Grubbs were in on two
touchdowns each. Kitchens
pushed his way across the goal
line once and then carried the
ball 20 yards for his second
score. Mayton completed a 32-
yard touchdown pass to
Jermaine Baxley and later
scored on a 5-yard keeper.
Grubbs tacked on a touch
down late in the first on a 9-yard
carry and then pushed his way
into the end zone again from the
1-yard line in the fourth quar
ter.
Sophomore Tom Ellison’s in
terception and 50-yard return
added 6 more points in the third.
Antwan Walker also scored on
a 3-yard carry.
Sophomore Donquell Green
led the Bears rushing, gaining
80 yards on 9 carries. Howard
picked up 60 yards on 4 carries,
and sophomore Brandell Little
rushed for 55 yards.
Sophomore kicker Untorrey
Thomas was 6 for 6 kicking
PATs for the night, but he
sprained his MCL in the second
quarter and sat out the rest of
the game. He may not play this
Friday as a precautionary mea
sure but is expected to return.
In all, the Bears totaled 394
yards offense to the Spartans’
net of 95 yards. Burke County
picked up 19 first downs while
Glenn Hills struggled with 4.
Defensively, the Bears were
led by Green, Jessie Bush,
Devonte Lambert, Aldrick
Kittles and Derwin Butler.
Despite outscoring their op
ponents 125-6 over the past two
weeks, Coach Parker said the
Bears still have plenty of room
for improvement. Each week,
the team looks to meet dozens
of goals that go beyond scoring
the most points, such as elimi
nating interceptions, denying
opponents’ yardage and avoid
ing penalties.
“It’s not just about winning
the ballgame, it’s about doing
the things we need to do well,”
Coach Parker said. “The big
thing is that we just need to stay
sharp ... the big games are com
ing.”
Sophomore Reginald Grubbs carried the ball for 2 touchdowns.
ACROSS THE REGION
How other teams across Region 3-AAA South fared last Friday
night:
• Butler (1-0, 5-0) defeated Cross Creek (0-1,2-3) 44-6
•Washington Co. (1-0, 3-2) defeated Hephzibah (0-1,0-5) 41-0
In Region 3-AAA North, Thomson (1-0, 5-0) still holds down the
top spot after defeating Richmond Academy 61-7 last week.
Grovetown (1-0, 4-1) is ranked second and defeated Harlem 36-0
last Friday.
Burke County heads to Hephzibah

The Bears have a homecom
ing to crash on Friday.
Burke County heads to
Hephzibah for their next region
game. The Rebels are celebrat
ing homecoming all week, and
kick off for their big game is set
for 7:30 p.m.
The Bears will take on a
Hephzibah team that’s hungry
for a win. The Rebels are 0-5
but have played a tougher
schedule than many in the re
gion.
Two of their losses came at
the hands of Washington
County and Thomson, both of
which sit among the state’s top
10 in Class AAA.
“There are a whole bunch of
teams that would be 0-2 against
those folks,” Bears Head Coach
Eric Parker said. “I think defen
sively they are a lot better than
some other teams we‘ve
played.”
Coach Parker also noted the
Rebels are bound to find some
success as they get more com
fortable with their new triple
option offense, which is similar
to the attack used by Georgia
Southern and Georgia Tech.
They have a veteran quarter
back on their side as well.
Hephzibah’s Terry Robinson
was a member of the Augusta
Chronicle’s Dream 16 team and
has the arm and speed to make
big plays.
“We just need to continue to
go play well,” Coach Parker
concluded.
This marks week three on the
road for the Bears, but the trip
is short this time.
Despite playing away from
home for the past two week
ends, Bear fans have far out
numbered those there to support
the home team.
Coach Parker applauded his
players for growing enthusiasm
for Burke County football.
“I tell the kids that atmo
sphere is something they cre
ated through their hard work,
and they ought not to take it for
granted,” he said.
