On senior day
Lady Spartans clinch No. 2
playoff seed
ByTres Bragg

On a day when the EBA soft-
ball team needed its senior play
ers to step up, they did so ... and
then some.
The Lady Spartan softball
team won a crucial game against
the Robert Toombs Lady Cru
saders Monday afternoon (Oct.
3), which secured them a No. 2
seed in the state playoffs and
home field advantage in the first
round. And, the seniors played
a huge role in the big win.
After two slow innings from
both teams to start the game, the
Lady Spartans came alive in the
top of the third. Senior Claire
Rives started the offensive spark
with a line drive triple to the
outfield. Amber Chambers
drove Rives in to score, giving
Edmund Burke a 1-0 lead. Af
ter Gray Lewis’ bunt advanced
Chambers to second base, Kasie
Hargrove hit a hard grounder to
the outfield. With runners on the
corners, Katelynn Kent stepped
up to the plate.
Kent found the pitch she was
waiting for, driving it to the out
field and bringing both runners
in to score. Senior Ansleigh
Dickey kept the inning alive
with another hit for the Lady
Spartans that advanced Kent to
second base. Shelby Harris
knocked Kent in from third
base, giving Edmund Burke a 4-
0 lead heading into the bottom
of the third inning.
Robert Toombs threatened to
score in the bottom half of the
inning when they had runners
on the corners and just one out.
But freshman pitcher Kayley
Sapp struck out the next batter
before causing the third and fi
nal out on a slow ground ball to
Kent at first base. The Lady
Spartans maintained their 4-0
lead.
EBA added to their lead in the
fourth when Dickey’s grounder
to short stop took a bad hop and
found the outfield. Speedy
pinch runner Abi Quick crossed
the plate to give the Lady Spar
tans a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Sapp had another huge
strikeout, this time to Robert
Toombs’ most dangerous hitter.
EBA catcher Hannah Jenkins
threw out a Lady Crusader at
tempting to steal third base to
save a potential run for the Lady
Spartans. However, Robert
Toombs did manage to score
later in the inning after a line
drive triple from one of their top
hitters. With just two innings left
to play, EBA was on top 5-1.
In the top of the sixth, the
Lady Spartans produced an
other offensive spark. Lewis
walked to start the inning, be
fore being driven in on another
big hit from Kent. Senior
Amanda Bragg added to the
lead with a hit to the outfield
that brought Kent home to
score. Dickey made contact on
her first pitch, advancing Kent
to third base and beating out a
throw to first base. Shelby Har
ris hit a ground out to short stop
but was able to get another run
across the plate. Dickey would
later score after stealing home
on a wild pitch.
In the bottom half of the last
inning, Robert Toombs found a
small spark of their own. They
were able to bring three runs
home. But, it wasn’t enough to
overtake the Lady Spartans.
EBA won 9-4.
The win gave Edmund Burke
the runner-up position in GISA
Region 1-AA, finishing behind
the Lady Eagles of Brentwood
who claimed the region title.
EBA’s first round opponent will
be Piedmont Academy. Pied
mont posted a 15-11 overall this Saturday, Oct. 8, at Edmund
record during the season, while Burke. Game one is set for 11
going 4-4 in region play. The a.m. Games two and three (if
best of three series will be held necessary) will follow.
This line drive triple by EBA senior Claire Rives started a huge
offensive spark in the third inning for the Lady Spartans. The
hit was part of a four-run inning, which eventually led to a 9-4
victory for Edmund Burke.
***Correction - In last week’s issue of The True Citizen
there was a softball picture of EBA catcher Hannah Jenkins
tagging out a runner at home plate. The cutline had the
name Hannah Powell. The True Citizen regrets this error.

The Lady Bears packed up their
gear last weekend, calling an end
to the 2011 softball season.
Despite finishing up the regular
season with a region win at home
over Butler, two loses to Harlem
in the first round of the region tour
nament on Saturday took them off
the bracket.
The Lady Bears beat Butler 10-
1 to even their record to 10-10
overall and 3-2 in the Region 3-
AAA South. Amber Hills picked
up her ninth win of the season.
The team was led at the plate by
Bailee Adkins, Nicole Rachels,
Laurie Askew and Hills as all had
clutch hits in the home finale.
On Saturday, the Lady Bears
fought the traffic in Harlem and
the Laurel and Hardy festival pa
rade.
“The Lady Bears needed Hardy
on the mound,” head coach Larry
Keller said, pointing to the pow
erful Lady Bulldogs’ 9-0 and 16-

The Lady Bears got hits from
Dalian Johnson and Askew.
Coach Keller applauded his
players’ contributions this season.
“The team won four more
games than the year before,”
Coach Keller said, adding that the
team could make even bigger
strides next season as they will lose
only one player to graduation.

The Lady Bears picked up a
road win in Statesboro last week.
Burke County High School’s
volleyball team defeated
Statesboro High School last Tues
day.
In the win, Heidi Lee and Ariel
Roberson each had 4 aces, and
Briana DeLaigle had 3 aces, 1 kill
and 1 block. Kaila Bates pitched
in with 2 aces and 2 kills.
Two days later, however, they
fell victim to two strong Colum
bia County teams, Lakeside and
Evans high schools.
“Playing against teams of such
caliber was a great experience for
us,” Burke County Coach
Cristina Zdroba said. “Everybody
knows that volleyball is an ‘air
affair’ and the truth is that we are
a relatively short team as far as
height goes. So most of the time,
it is difficult to play the offensive
game we want to.”
Despite Burke County’s timid
start with Evans (7-25,11 -25), the
Lady Bears started to play stron
ger in the second match against
Lakeside (11-25, 23-25).
“In the second game with
Lakeside we took the lead for
a while and the girls played
hard and fought to win,” Coach
Zdroba said. “We felt the absence
of our main spiker Destiny
Turner, who is injured and played
only for a short while.”
Still, Coach Zdroba applauded
her team’s effort and for giving
Lakeside a battle.
The Lady Bears will play in the
region tournament at Butler later
this week.
