Lady Bears make state playoffs
From Staff Reports
The Lady Bears have ex
tended their season on the vol
leyball court.
Burke County High School’s
girls secured a spot in the Class
AAA state playoffs after placing
among the top four in the region.
The Lady Bears, No. 4 seed
from Region 3-AAA, face
Oconee County High School,
No. 1 seed from Region 8-AAA,
today (Wednesday) in
Watkinsville in the first round.
Burke County claimed a spot
on the bracket last weekend by
winning their first match in the
region tournament, which was
played against Richmond Acad
emy.
“We managed to win the
match against ARC this past Fri
day night, a win that put us in
the first four volleyball teams in
the region,” Burke County Head
Coach Cristina Zdroba said. The
Lady Bears topped ARC 19-25,
25-13 and 25-18.
In the win, Destiny Turner had
3 aces, 3 kills and 1 block.
Briana Delaigle had 5 aces, 2
kills and 1 block, Jasmine Miles
recorded 3 kills, Heidi Lee had
2 aces, Ariel Roberson picked up
1 ace, and Sierra Anderson
added 1 kill.
Unfortunately, the Lady Bears
weren’t able to secure a higher
seeding due to losses on Satur
day to still undefeated
Grovetown and Westside. “The
absence of two of our players at
this tournament forced the girls
to adjust to a different rotation
and it affected somewhat their
communication on the court,”
Coach Zdroba said. “However,
in my book they are all winners.
They worked hard to take Burke
County High School’s volley
ball team for the second time to
the state playoffs.”
The Lady Bears made their
first-ever appearance in the state
volleyball playoffs three years
ago.
