Marching masters
Burke County High School hosted the Burke Bear Classic Band Competition last weekend, welcoming bands from
across the state. As the host school, the Pride of Burke County Marching Band did not compete but did offer an
exhibition performance. Lakeside scored highest for music and auxiliary, Southeast Bulloch for marching, effect
and percussion and Henry County for drum major. The event was the second of six scheduled in the Georgia
Marching Band Series, a season-long competition for high school marching bands that Burke County band direc
tor Charles Westman helped start several years ago.The competition offers band a chance to compete, using the
same GHSA classification system used in sports and other extracurricular activities. Last year,The Pride of Burke
County was the Class AAA champion in the series. Above, the Thomson High School marching band performs

Big Dawgs
The Big Dawg Daddy BBQ team had a big
weekend in Lyons.The Burke County based
competitors had two top-10 finishes at the
Real Squeal cook-off, bringing home a 4 th
place in chicken and a 10 th in brisket. Pic
tured at the award ceremony are Travis
Sturdivant, center, and Jody Ellison, right.
Other teammates include Debbie Ellison,
Denise Small and Mike Small. Mike also com
peted in the Real Squeal’s backyard compe
tition and brought home the reserve cham
pion trophy after finishing second overall. He
turned in 1 st place chicken and 6 th place ribs.
