Former police chief gets new city position
By Elizabeth Billips
lizbillips@yahoo.com
Wrens’ recently retired po
lice chief is the new guy on
Waynesboro’s force.
David Hannah, a 22-year law
enforcement veteran and
former Wrens Chief of Police,
began work yesterday (Tues
day) as Waynesboro’s first-ever
COPS (Community Oriented
Policing Services) of
ficer.
His pay and benefits
for the next 36 months
will be covered by a
$122,118 grant from
the U.S. Department
of Justice. As part of
the agreement, the
City of Waynesboro
will pick up his salary
David Hannah
for the fourth year.
Waynesboro Police
Chief Alfonzo Will
iams said 50-year-old
Hannah should be a
good fit for the job,
which will focus on
community policing -
largely, decreasing
family violence and
cracking down on
drug activity in housing areas.
“I’ve seen him at work on
many different fronts ... the
community is going to benefit
from his experience,” Chief
Williams said, detailing his
past dealings with manage
ment, canine units and grant
writing. "He’s got the contacts
and resources to get the job
done.”

Illegal dumping cases heard in court
By Anne Marie Kyzer
annemariek@thetruecitizen.com
Illegal dumpers were handed
fines and probation in the first
county ordinance court held in
several years.
Since a code enforcement of
ficer was hired two months ago
partly to help deal with the
county’s illegal dumping prob
lem, a number of citations have
been issued.
Chief Magistrate Judge Ster
ling Wimberly held court last
Friday, and six of the eight cases
dealt with dumping.
Fines ranging from $33 to
$200 were handed down for
violations, including dumping
outside of containers, dumping
by non-residents, sifting
through dumpster contents and
dumping unacceptable items,
according to Deputy Clerk Ann
Sapp. One offender was also
required to serve six months
probation for not immediately
paying the fine.
Maximum fines can be up
wards of $1,000, but Judge
Wimberly said he chose not to
hit offenders with excessive
fines this go-round.
“But it won’t stay like that,”
he warned, noting that stiffer
penalties are to come as the
word gets out about enforce
ment.
This is the first county ordi
nance court held here in about
two years, as the county has
been without a code enforce
ment officers in that time.
County ordinance court will
now be held the first Friday of
each month.
