Bears swat Yellow Jackets in Homecoming matchup
By David Stembridge
stembridge@gmail.com
The Bears pleased the big
homecoming crowd last Friday
by putting the sting on the
Wayne County Yellow Jackets
in the Bear Den.
Burke County defeated the
Region 3B-AAAA team 50-21.
The Bears racked up 574 yards
of total offense, which Head
Coach Eric Parker saw as a big
deal.
“Wayne County is one of the
better teams in the region and
we knew it," he said. “Our kids
just came in and held them back
in the second half and I felt like
we took over the ball game and
dominated. That to me is a sign
of a pretty good football team.”
The Bears struck early with
a safety after backing up the
Yellow Jackets to their own
one-yard line. A fumble by
Wayne County minutes later led
to a 25-yard touchdown run by
junior quarterback Donquell
Green. He went on to total 241
yards rushing in the game on
20 carries and passed for 146
yards. Junior Tom Ellison
kicked the PAT, giving the
Bears a lead of 9-0.
A fumble on the subsequent
kickoff put Wayne County in
scoring position as they slipped
through the Bears defense and
scored at the end of the first
quarter to make it 9-7.
The Bears came back early in
the second with Green scoring
with a 54-yard run. Minutes
later junior quarterback Anto
nio Harold scored his first
touchdown for the Bears with
a 40-yard carry. Both kicks by
Ellison were good for PATs to
make the score 23-7.
Coach Parker was glad to
have Harold back on the field
after a shoulder injury sidelined
him most of last year.
Players on the sideline could
be heard calling Harold ‘Beast’
as he continued to push through
the big Wayne County lineback
ers, rushing for a total of 114
yards on llcarries.
The Bears intercepted the ball
halfway through the second to
put Green in scoring position
again. His 29-yard run gave the
Bears a 30-7 lead. But the Yel
low Jackets fought back scor
ing a touchdown just before
halftime to make it 30-14.
The Bears pulled off some
great pass plays in an early sec
ond-half drive capped by a 30-
yard touchdown run by Green.
With 1:19 on the clock at the
end of the third, Harold ran 5
yards for another touchdown.
Senior running back Malik Lee
brought in one of his own with
24 seconds left in the third, and
Ellison delivered on 2 of 3
PATs. With a running clock,
Wayne County scored in the
last three minutes of the game
to bring the final score to 50-
21.
Coach Parker said the Bears’
strength at the line of scrim
mage has continued to help
them.
“The ability to play along the
line of scrimmage offensively
and defensively probably is as
important, if not more impor
tant, than any other phase of the
game," he said. “We’ve been
really good up there the last few
years and I think that’s prob
ably why we play pretty good
offense and defense, especially
playing the style of football we
play."
Senior defensive lineman and
center Jay Dye knew this game
was going to be a little differ
ent, but felt like they got the
job done.
“Once we got them tired,
they were pretty much on the
ropes," he said. “We kept on
pushing from there and that
was it. They are a good team
and it’s kind of interesting how
once we started scoring, we just
kept scoring.”
Dye summed up Coach
Parker’s desire for the Bears.
“We still have things to work
on and to keep getting better,”
Dye said. “We still have to prac
tice, hope for the best and just
play the way we’re being
coached.”
Senior wide receiver Keviuan Crumbley, returning from two weeks off due to injury, blocks a
pass in the end zone.
Junior quarterback Antonio Harold filled in for Donquell Green in fourth quarter, rushing 114 yards and scoring 2 touchdowns.

Bears travel to Richmond
Academy this Friday
By David Stembridge
stembridge@gmail.com
The Burke County Bears (5-
1, 2-0) will face off against
sub-region foe Richmond Acad
emy (2-3, 1-0) on Friday.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
at ARC Stadium in Augusta.
So far this season, the Mus
keteers have managed wins over
Josey and Glenn Hills but were
defeated by Evans, Statesboro
and Wayne County.
The Bears have an 8-5 over
all record against Richmond
Academy, which has been un
der the helm of head coach
Wayne Hughes since 2007.
Burke County lost their last two
contests with the Musketeers,
which were played in 1998 and
1999.
Burke County Head Coach
Eric Parker and his coaching
staff spent Sunday afternoon
reviewing film of Richmond
with the team to see what the
Musketeers have to offer this
year.
“They’re very athletic, about
like most of the teams in Rich
mond County, with quite a few
speedsters on their team,” Coach
Parker said, noting running
back C.J. Welcher. “They’ve
got really good size, particularly
on the offensive and defensive
lines, so we’ll have to go in ex
pecting we’ll get their best ef
fort and be ready to go head to
head.”
Coach Parker believes the
Bears are in pretty good shape,
but will still have to work hard
this week to get ready for the
game.
“We brought them in, let them
watch the film and then talked
through some of the things we
want to do,” he said. “We’ll go
to work tomorrow and start get
ting ready just to do what we’ve
been doing now for years. It’s
what seems to work."
At this point in the season,
Bear players have some battle
scars and injuries incurred in the
past few weeks that are present
ing the team with additional
challenges for preparation. But
Coach Parker said that’s to be
expected.
“We now have a little adver
sity... we’re affected by some
injuries. Some kids are not in
the lineup and some kids now
are not one-hundred percent,”
he said. “Whenever that happens
we begin by asking for some of
our younger guys who may be
the two and three deep guys to
step in and give us field time.
That’s always a challenge but it’s
something we prepare for so I
think the kids will be fine.”
