A new area manager for
Georgia Power has started
work in the Waynesboro office.
Cam Parker started in
Waynesboro a
couple of
weeks ago
and will be
responsible

service, dis
tribution and

Cam Parker - n Burke
Jefferson and Jenkins coun
ties.
Parker comes to Burke
County from Toccoa, where
he served as the local man
ager for 16 years. He served
in similar roles in Elberton
and Royston since beginning
his career with Georgia Power
in 1980 and also served in the
U.S. Army.
Parker said he sought the
opportunity in Waynesboro
partly because of the historic
events surrounding Plant
Vogtle’s expansion.
“Plant Vogtle is very impor
tant to the community and
certainly important to Geor
gia Power and the Southern
Company,” he said. “To play
a small role in working with
the community as the project
moves forward was too big of
an opportunity to let go by.”
Parker, who has 28 years of
experience in line distribu
tion, called the team at the
Waynesboro Area Office out
standing and added that he
looks forward to working
with them.
The Valdosta native and
Lowndes County High
School graduate said he’s al
ready heard of the football
fever in Burke County, and
he’s anxious to get his family
moved here.
“I am truly excited to be
here,” he said. “Hopefully,
there are little places where I
can pitch in and help. I can’t
wait to get started.”
County, bank officials deny
loan stipulations for hospital
By Anne Marie Kyzer
annemariek@thetruecitizen.com
As the Burke County Hospital
Authority sorts out funding is
sues, there’s some confusion over
stipulations that affect local doc
tors.
The confusion was set off two
weeks ago when the authority
voted to eliminate call-pay for
the hospital’s medical staff.
Members did so during a discus
sion about their options for pur
suing loans, which Hospital Au
thority Chairman Gerald Murray
said might not be available if
they continue to pay the
hospital’s previous owners, sev
eral of whom are members of
the medical staff. The stipula
tions were said to be brought up
by the hospital’s lender, Regions
Bank, and the Burke County
Commission, which the author
ity has asked to underwrite a
loan.
However, bank and county of
ficials later said they had not put
any restrictions on the authority.
The one clear conclusion is the
authority’s lender. Regions Bank,
has not set any conditions for the
hospital.
Murray said he must have
misspoken but certainly did not
intend to imply that the bank had
placed any restrictions on them.
“They have been fully coop
erative with us," he said, noting
the bank’s willingness to help
over the past several months.
“They did not put any restric
tions on us.”
But Murray maintains those
stipulations, which were aimed
at cutting costs, came from
county officials.
Murray said the condition had
not been stated explicitly but it
was implied in a previous meet
ing that money should not be go
ing to the previous owners of the
hospital. He said call pay was not
specifically mentioned.
“I think that was implied,” he
said.
Meanwhile, County Adminis
trator Merv Waldrop contends
the county hasn’t put any restric
tions on the hospital regarding
loans.
“The County has not put any
restrictions on the Hospital Au
thority either ... no one from the
County has told the Hospital that
it cannot pay the previous own
ers ... the Commissioners have
not given any ultimatums or di
rectives on how the hospital au
thority operates," Waldrop ex
plained in an email.
Regardless of where the cost
cutting suggestions came from,
Murray said the hospital must
still reign in expenses to become
profitable again.
