Author hosts book signing in Sardis
From Staff Reports
New author and veteran
teacher Lori Ansley held a book
signing at Our Family Cafe in
Sardis Sunday.
Ansley, formerly Lori
Bohannon of Sylvania and a
longtime English teacher at
Screven County High School,
co-authored Surviving the Gaunt
let with John Archer of Tifton.
Ansley said she decided to hold
her fist book signing at Our Fam
ily Cafe because she was sur
rounded by family and friends
there. Alongside her book, she
also displayed several of her lo
cal nature photographs.
“Doing something like this,
selling your book or displaying
your photos, literally places a
person on display. I can’t think
of a better place for my ‘maiden
journey’ than surrounded by
friends and family,” she said.
“Mrs. Jackie (Williams) and her
staff are like family to me since
I usually eat here one or two
times a week. She is a wonder
ful lady.”
Surviving the Gauntlet is a
non-fiction account of John
Archer’s family’s struggle with
drug addiction. After his son
Doug began experimenting with
drags in high school, the family
went from denial to a realization
their son had a drug problem.
Over the next decade and a half,
John and his wife Joan, formerly
Joan Jamerson of Sylvania, took
their son to several drag reha
bilitation centers. After each
visit, they were hopeful, but al
ways that hope was destroyed by
Doug’s return to drags.
Archer, a retired Army Colo
nel, claims in his book that fi

choice but to practice tough love
on their son, leaving him to his
own devices for nearly a year.
During that time, Doug became
homeless, and was surrounded by
several people who claimed to
have his best interest at heart, but
chose to exploit the young man.
As mentioned in the book, the
ordeal nearly destroyed the Ar
cher family. Not until John un
derstood that God wanted con
trol of the situation did he and
his wife begin to find their way
back to each other and to rebuild
their family.
In the book Archer warns
families about denial, which he
says can allow the problem to
morph into a nearly insurmount
able obstacle.
“John always believed that
God wanted this story told,”
Ansley said of their reason for
writing the account. “He and his
wife, who passed earlier this
year, hoped that their tribulations
and realizations could help an
other family going through simi
lar troubles.”
